I've got a 2001 f250 7.3 with a power steering leak that I can't seem to figure out. It looks like it's dripping off of the power steering pump but the pump is only 3 months old. I sealed the line that goes into the pump with some thread lock yesterday and then filled her back up. Could I have over filled it and now it's leaking out of the res when I turn or go up hill? Or could the 3 month old pump be leaking? Thanks in advance
If it dripping from the area of the high pressure line to the hydro-boost you may have tightened the high pressure line at the PS pump too much. The fitting on the pump side has a plastic washer and does not require the normal amount of torque one would typically use.
Yes, over filling can cause it to leak out of the reservoir.
Yes, a new or relatively new pump can leak....was it a reman? Did you get the one with the reservoir or w/o? My next to most recent one was a reman from O'R....'s and leaked from the start. I took it off and returned it and then went to NAp? paid $10 more for their reman and it does not leak.
First, I would get some Simple Green and clean the heck out of everything related to the PS from the firewall to the pump and forward. Then check for leaks and get back to us.
It was a reman with the res attached to it. I cleaned it really good but it's still a little over full so when I get to work tomorrow I'll take a little bit out to see if that stops the leaking. If it continues leaking I'm gonna say it's the pump since I've sealed everything else. I'm hoping the warranty is still in effect, if so when I get the new one is there a better way to check if the o ring on the res is gonna fail? Thanks for all the help guys
The NaP? parts store where I purchased the final one that is currently working had three in stock...that should say something in and of itself...they are all Ford remans.
So, I checked each one and chose the pump that had the least amount of in and out play...or should I say, felt the tightest. If the store you go to has more than one, you will see what I am talking about. It was certainly tighter that the one I got from O's.
I don't know if this is a good strategy or not long term. I can say that the current one doesn't leak.
Oh man, this does not sound like a promising future for me and power steering pumps. I guess it'll keep me busy lol. Could I order an o ring kit for the res and try using a better o ring than the one from the reman?
Your best bet is a Saginaw Pump. You'll have to be a "little" ingenious to get it mounted. But, nothing too drastic. I've done one on a 5.4 but not a 7.3
Also AGR Performance has some upgraded pumps that flow more fluid.
Uses the existing fluid housing and O-Ring to seal the two parts together. I know a guy who swears by them. But, he swears by anything he buys.
They also carry upgraded lines.
I have installed these. They have good directions. Just get some "seal grease" for the O-Ring. Makes it a tad easier.
I've heard of the Saginaw pumps before but I've never really looked into what's involved with installing one. Guess I should do some research. It'll be better than changing pumps for the rest of the life of the truck

GM used them exclusively for a period of time.
If you get a used one, you don't want any pump that does not come from a 4WD or Lager Vehicle like a Box Truck. For the reason, we have a Power Boost System and it requires constant flow to stop while at the same time turning the front wheels.
Personally, I think ours are under rated and should have a larger impeller.
A small amount (ounces) of a friction modifier makes our work 100% better. Especially with larger tires. All the seals are impregnated rubber or silicone rubber so no worries there.
If I recall, I'm certain we just had to cut a Spacer from some round stock. I used a Laser Level to align it to the other pulley's. They were only 3/16" or 5/16" or something similar. That was on a Gasser (5.4)
I "guess" if one were pressed they could use washers stacked upon one another. That's just not me.
As of right now my 7.3 is my daily so I'm not sure I wanna try fabricating or modifying a power steering bracket. I might try sealing the o ring on a new pump, I'd like to avoid this whole situation for as long as I can once it's fixed. It's awfully messy
