Power Steering Pump replacement?

Power Steering Pump replacement?

well guys,

after getting an assignment to Germany and deciding to take my truck, I have had nothing but problems with it lol!. but that's ok cause I'd rather them happen here in the states instead of across the big pond. anyway, I'm thinking I'm just going to replace my power steering pump. about 3 weeks ago, I noticed it whining a bit. So, I added some fluid and it went away. I figured I would flush it for good measure and so I did with mobile 1 synthetic ATF. well, a few days later, I notice it leaking. It's a slow leak, but still a leak. about 1 week ago, I notice my brake pedal feeling really soft and I damn near have to push it to the floor to get this big sumbitch to stop. not sure if this is related or not. I figured since I'm taking it overseas, just go ahead and replace the power steering pump and any other pertinent parts that go along with it.

What other parts/peices for the PS pump should I replace?

Does anyone have a link to a wiki or video for replacing the PS pump?

I plan on going all Motorcraft parts with whatever I do.

Thanks for any help with this guys. I'm open to any and all suggestions as always!

I have a few friends who have been running these successfully for years and 100k + miles. I can't speak directly to their reliability but the swear they're bullet proof.

Are you talking about a pump leak or a line leak?

If a pump leak, you might just need a new reservoir O ring. I've slid the reservoir off of a Ford CII pump with the pump still installed in the vehicle, replaced the large O ring, and slid the reservoir back on and ti fixed the pump housing leak.

If a line fitting, there are many posts about that replacement, including a detailed thread within the last 6 months of someone who changed his lines in a parking lot.

My power steering always has been a bit weak. maybe something to look into. looks like there are a few minor mods to do to make it fit though. thanks for the linky!

To be honest, I haven't been able to locate where it is coming from yet. Is the Ford CII pump the same as what we have on our superduty's? removal procedure the same?

And I'll look for the thread about the guy changing the lines in the parking lot.

I agree with Y2KW57 being an inexpensive fix on the pump - stateside. I would just replace it before going. Parts and shipping can be outrageous over seas. Not to mention the wait time of 10 - 30 days often. The shippers may wee have an issue if its begins leaking badly as well.

The pump is an easy change. You just need the powersteering pulley removal/install tool.

Be sure you replace the high pressure line. That's the part that tends to fail, and when it does you're not going to be driving much till you fix it.

When my hose blew, it took out the threads in the side of the pump so I got to replace it too.

ok. So I will be buying a new pump and high pressure line. any other parts dealing with the P/S pump I should replace while im in there?

and where can I get one of there pulley remove/install tools?

Almost any parts store and many tool stores. Including the cheapies like harbor freight. There's really not much to it other than holding your mouth right to get all the pieces in place.

#9 refers to a picture in post 7. What they're referring to in post 7 is just some split wire loom to wrap over the hoses that might rub on the shock bracket for the 4wd trucks. Picked up a P/S pump, both high pressure lines, and pulley removal tool from Napa today all for under $200 including the core charge. I really wanted to go motorcraft, but couldnt bring myself to spend $600 for parts. Plus I read good reviews about the napa one and it is supposedly quieter than the ford pump. got the pump pulled tonight. gonna try to finish it up tomorrow after I get off of work. I'm also trying to clean up as much residue while I have everything pulled. Managed to remove the foil from IC pipe. now I just have to all the damn glue off!!

If you can determine the leak was from the reservoir on the pump pick up a reservoir housing oring and keep it as a spare, ditto with the lines. If they are good ship them in your household goods.

Yes.

That's the only reason why I mentioned my experience changing the housing O ring only on a Ford CII pump "in frame", without removing the pump. The nylon housing slides backwards off of the pump, and the large O ring (the diameter of the entire housing) can be replaced that way.

I haven't had any issues with the CII pump on my 7.3L to date, but I did have a leak on a 5.0L HO with the same pump, which was fixed by changing only the Oring. I think there is an O ring and housing kit available from Motorcraft, where you replace the housing too, because one of the nipples often breaks off in some high heat engine compartments.

I'm interested to hear your results. The PS pump in my truck has been weak since the day I bought the truck. No power at a stop and LOUD. It's a moaning/groaning pump and it feels like it adds load to the motor at low RPMs. I dislike the power steering on these trucks immensely. My wife's '04 Cummins CCLB 4x4 had far superior power steering. Only reason I mention that because the Cummins is a heavy motor, so undeniably a heavy front end.

I test drove a 2015 SD XL CCLB 4x4 PSD last weekend. I could turn the wheel with my pinky finger at a complete stop and zero noise. I was sooooooo tempted to buy that truck. Truck Month incentives are hard to walk away from.

Well, new pump and lines installed. no leaks. wasn't able to determine where the leak was coming from. Everything was soaked from it leaking so bad, it made it hard to tell. I'm still dealing with braking issues at the moment (power steering fluid mixed with my brake fluid.....big mistake!!). the pump doesnt seem to be any quieter than the stock one, but it does the job.
