Oh no, definitely wouldn't hurt. People who do the Harpoon and Hutch mods usually do an aftermarket filter and it ends up on the rail, but there aren't any from the factory on the stock 7.3's. Maybe ambulances are different...???

No clue....I have never worked on one. I do know that my truck had an extra filter on the rail that had been abandoned by the PO....which should have been a clue.

I don't think it is a boost problem as he said no smoke (overfueling). My bet is a fuel delivery issue. He said it was dead empty and probably sitting a while, and also don't the vans have the steel tanks that de-laminate? Time and time again I have seen people waste a lot of time and money on a low power issue while seemingly in denial about fuel delivery. Maybe because it's not really a fun job to drop the tank, there are no codes that point to fuel delivery, and there is really no good way to verify correct fuel pressure without a gauge that can be read while driving the vehicle.
The basics of keeping a diesel running are a good fuel supply and a good air supply and sometimes, due to the complexity of our engines, we overlook the basics and jump ahead wasting time and money.
Just recently there was a guy who spent thousands at a shop on new injectors when all along it was only a clogged fuel pickup.

Yes, he needs to rig up a fuel gauge and drop the tank(s). I agree it should be one of the first things that gets eliminated.

well i ordered a filter from a ford dealer just to make sure i dont have to think about that anymore... my scanner sends live data to my phone and most cars i have worked on send out fuel psi and other info... im a full time single father so i am both mom and dad so i dont have a brain anymore... so its hard to explain myself or what goes through my head... but i should be fine with what i have to check and make sure its running well... what are good ways to treat the fuel or clean out the fuel system with out taking it any place

You won't read fuel pressure with a scanner on a 7.3 Powerstroke. To fix the flawed fuel delivery design google the" Hutch Mod".

He is correct due to the fact that FORD did not include a sending unit/sensor for fuel pressure. So, short of rigging up a manual gauge which is the least expensive route, there is no way to monitor fuel pressure.

Here is a pic where you would want to run the fuel psi gauge. Back side of the fuel bowl.

so when i worked on it yesterday it was very hard to get started and for it to stay running... my partner topped off the tank and yes i made sure it was with diesel... we had so many things to do that i didnt have time to change the filter (i couldn't even get the cap off to get to the filter so im going to try tapping my ratchet and spraying something around the gasket and see if that helps) it ran just fine Tuesday but Thursday gave us isses... Wednesday is when he topped it off with 26 gallons... what fuel additives work great cleaning out the system?

There are no additives to clean the tank screens. Only way is to drop the tank.
