OK so a buddy and i just got a older ambulance that we will be converting into a mobile work station and the fist thing i noticed is it really doesn't have much power... i was fallowing him back to his place after we picked it up and up hill he couldn't go the speed limit and it didn't have any over fueling going on... when i test drove it it sounded like it was making boost or at least sounded like it... i didn't have my scanner plugged in and i don't live very close so i wont see it until the day after tomorrow and so i'm just trying to figure it out or get some ideas before so i know what to look for... its got 2 alts and 4 batteries and they all seem to be doing fine (or so i think because i didn't have a chance to test anything before i had to pick up my kid (full time single father)) this is both of our first diesel. thanks for any help
do a visual inspection check turbo boots, then if all is good I would get a boost gauge and check the boost pressure. Or you could pull the boot off of the turbo and check the fins on the turbo. check the play on the turbo shaft as well.

when i go to his place to remove the stickers and make it legal for the road i plan to plug my scanner in and it can read boost... the thing is it has clean exhaust so its not under boost but it was low on fuel (almost on the E) and im not sure if it was sitting or if the fuel is bad but it started just fine... one guy said it could be a alt going out or bad batteries but the batteries are less then 2 years old and it has 4 batteries and 2 alts
Well there should be a primary fuel filter on the center on the engine, will be a big black cap. Also there should be a secondary fuel filter on the frame rail that almost every one forgets to change so they clog up a lot.

thanks a bunch... all change both after i test the boost
i know its a obd 2 scanner that works with my phone... i scan and clear codes for friends and also use it as a gauge for the gauges a dash might not have... ive used it on a few cars and its worked very well but its no shop tool
Super. Grab as many of those as you can and let the guys on here know the results...otherwise it is a huge guessing game.
And don't forget the fuel filter...it probably wouldn't hurt to change it anyway.
just ordered both fuel filters from ford and ill go from there... also this is my first diesel ive worked on and i like to have reference books on hand for any vehicle i work on and i cant find one for the 01 e350 with the 7.3... any help with a good book will be VERY helpful

Super. Let us know what color the one in the fuel bowl is....
Honestly, I have not purchased a manual for the 7.3 even though I found one about a year ago that was very comprehensive. I felt the money would be better spent on a purchase of some scanning equipment to read codes and log data.
There is not much information in any of the books that the members in this forum don't already possess and most of them are willing to share freely.
I can't help you on the ambulance side of the equation although there are a few guys on here that have e350's and they are great.

On a 7.3??? I don't believe that is the case. On a 6.0, yes, but not the 7.3's.
