roger--thanks---the 2.42 and the 3.67 are the goodies I needed on the adapter--trying to get everything from one place so well see. Hopefully I'll get the explorer out of the way this weekend--got a good price on everything to do it all four corners so got to jump.
I't doesn't get the primo stuff the truck does as it doesn't get driven near as much. I will be doing the new axle seal as well--was wondering what driver was needed for it.
Not overly deep. the threads don't stick out too much over the nut top.
Also you want to have on and a set of open 33 mm and 28 mm and an allen
for the snugging up part. Not sure on the size of allen but it was the big one
in a standard set of metric allen wrenches.
HOW EVER The press set I showed is not the right one to fully seat the
upper ball joint in the socket.
Do you have the seal setting tool? Make sure the knuckle bore is clean of'
any rust when you go to place it in. Then lift up on the U-joint as you guide
the back ring through the back opening of the knuckle.
This tool takes a lot of whacking to seat the seal on the axle. Just the tool needed
to seat in the knuckle or so they say. Don't grease the seal or the bore. Per Ford.
Here are some photos. And if you are using the updated tube seal you want a
tool with some side walls to keep the center off the center of the seal. The raised
edge will depress into the outer ring of the tube. Be sure to clean the axle shaft
of all rust. I painted mine after I cleaned it.
Thanks!! Haven't gotten anything yet just getting ducks in a row. I will be putting in the updated axle seal. On the hub bolts those are 21mm correct?
On the vaccum seal I have an 8lb hammer I'll put to use

Yes the nuts are 21mm. I usually use the same socket I used to remove the lugnuts.

Awesome thanks. So now I've found the parts for less than 250 (both sides) and now pulling the tools together. I'm sure wanting this to go better then the explorer did.

The most critical is when going back together. Make sure whatever you are pressing in or on is dead straight. Starting a ball joint in crooked can ruin your day. And those $55 seals, well you know........ take your time.

My bench vise is just above waist level and I had to stand on a short step ladder to
get good clean hits and I am 6' tall. The update seals don't need a lot of whack to seat.
I used a dead-blow mallet with that one tool and an adaptor to hole it in place.
Adaptor = socket that does not go through the center hole and and extension that clears the knuckle to whack it on.
