I'm trying to figure out how to put a 2wd van E4OD transmission into a 1994 Ford F-150 4.9L 4x4. Is it possible to do the swap? And if so, what do I need and what should I do?
You can change the E4OD from a 4x2 to a 4x4 transmission. Tear the trans completely down. Start putting it back together with a 4x4 output shaft. It's a different shaft than the 4x2 one. You'll also need to change the extension housing, the one on the 4x2 trans accepts a driveshaft, you need the 4x4 housing that mounts a transfer case.
Is it possible? Yes. Is it worth doing? Rarely. Look at what Mark said you need to do in order to do it. I'd say the only situation where it would be worth it is if you had a 2WD transmission that needed to be rebuilt that you wanted to put into your 4WD truck, AND you had a 4WD transmission that was shot, that you didn't want to rebuild, that you could steal the tailshaft and extension housing from.
I'd say that at least 99 times out 100, if you have a donor trans to get the 4WD part from you're better off rebuilding it then converting a 2WD trans.
