So I'm on a 300 mile road trip and half way in I think im going over a bumpy road, but that bumpy road never ends. turns out the truck is running like crap which is causing the vibration/bumping. feels like youre going over a bumpy road when driving and when idling the truck kinda bucks. Anyways i thought it might clear out since its given me SHORT issues of the same kind but always cleared up in no time. noticed a check engine light so i got it scanned. p0270 cylinder 4 injector circuit low. truck never cleared up.
my questions are:
If I do an injector buzz test, will this tell me if the electrical side of the injector(such as a bad ficm or a chafed wire etc.) is bad or if the injector is bad itself?
Do you think I should just pop in a new injector #4?
I was planning on just going to ford and buying a reman, I think there like $250 b/c i dont have time to wait for shipping online.. yes/no?
Another question while I'm at it.. Is there anywhere to by like a service manual or a book or something that would help to guide through common maintenance and issues on these trucks
Yup, Ford Reman is the way to go. A few more bucks but more new parts inside and the warranty went up to 24 months a while back.
As for manuals, if you've bought a Haynes or Chilton manual for a 6.0 powered SuperDuty I'm sure you found them less than helpful. Ford Service Cd's are available and I can recommend Aldata (subscription). I not aware of a good place to get a decent paper manual anymore. With a little searching pretty much anything you might need to know is available in the forums also, of course FTE is the best . Check the tech folder at the top, there's a couple of threads on injectors and the "Coffee table book" has a good general description as well as a list of torque values on the last few pages.
As far as repairing the issue, would only one injector make the truck run rough like that?
My '03 had number six done before I bought it due to rough running. I think the FICM was weak which might have caused it.
At any rate, it was throwing a code and replacing it cleared it up just fine.
With that said, had I owned it before that point I would have bit the bullet and done them all I think.
"p0270 cylinder 4 injector circuit low" could be as simple as a loose connector or bad wire/harness. It would suck to buy an injector and still throw a code.
If it's the 2005 in your profile, the standpipes and dummy plugs have been updated since the engine was built, but putting in the full set will require pulling the valve cover on the other side. Not sure I'd sweat it on a road trip. Also the STC fitting on the oil pump is a known failer but again, turbo and oil pump cover has to come off for access.
I kind of figured it wasn't the ficm just because it's only throwing one code and not all 8, plus the person who owned the truck before me replaced the injectors one by one instead of doing all 8 so it likely has 320k miles on that injector. I will check the connections while in there but to ohm the injector connector don't I need to take the valve covers off anyway?

The injector connector is outside the valve cover in the "valley" of the motor. 2nd back on the drivers side. It's just beneath the edge of (not under) the valve cover and goes through the aluminum rocker box. The injector harness is held to the injector with a silver "C" clip that you can push in while pulling on the harness or completely pull it out and remove the harness. Get help if you can.
