Investigate that engine a little more, looks like a 223 valve cover that has had the oil filler cap position modified. Photo below correct valve cover for a 262.

Yes an old thread, but always an ongoing interest in finding these hard to find engines. IMO, a bone head decision by Ford not to use it as a regular option in all light duties starting in '61.
Actually, the OP was just looking for another engine. His blew up at ECTA time trials. He found two, one in Oregon and another in Oklahoma (?). He's now waiting for new connecting rods. Your timing was only a couple days off. I'm interested but unable to "pull the trigger" right now. You should show a picture of the left side of the block. There was an extra cast rib on the side of the 262 blocks (3 instead of two). That's the best way to quickly tell the difference.
