I just pulled one of these motors out of a 1962 C600 ford truck was running when pulled but burning oil. I would sell this complete unit if your still looking.
I pulled the engine out of my 61 uni and found it to be a 262. I've been through it and it is absolutely flawless. Cylinder walls beautiful. It has been resealed. I have it set up with gm 1 wire alternator. It's mated to a heavy duty T98a compound low 4 speed. New clutch, new ring gear, new pressure plate/bearing. New water pump (very hard to find) new camshaft (even harder to find) new tapppets, new valve seals, rebuilt balancer. Has crack free manifold (repaired) glass bowl Holley 1904, trans has been resealed and is perfect. Oil pump is later drive for duraspark conversion. Duraspark distributor(gear took me 9 months to source). Painted Ford red. Ran great when pulled to reseal and then found it deserved exceptional treatment. Will part with to fund a small block project or purchase crown Vic power train. Not even sure what it's worth because I've never seen one again anywhere for sale.
The gear is reverse and 12 teeth. Find an old 3 cyl ford tractor distributor (jubilee I think). That's what I used. They're the only other Ford motor I know of with gear drive and multiple of 3 cyl.
I have a running 262. I have no idea what it is worth, though. Swapping in a crown vic powertrain. Can someone tell me how much value the 262 has? It does have the 8 bolt valve cover and the extra rib above the dipstick hole. I would like to sell it to off set the cost of this project. Also have the 3 speed manual transmission, driveshaft, rear end, and misc brake brackets, pedals, etc.
John found his engine and is headed for Bonneville this August. Check out his post on the HAMB "XO/PP Bonneville Project." He built an amazing engine out of a tired, old 262.
Pappawheely: I'm pretty sure that engine on Craigslist is a 223. It's missing the 3rd rail that is cast into the dipstick area and, it's hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like a 2 bolt valve cover. The 262's used the later valve cover with the bolts around the perimeter.
That's cool! Is the 223 an engine worth purchasing for a 80's F250? I would like to go with a inline 6, don't know if a 300 would be better as far as parts availability.
Definitely stick with a 300. The basic engine construction is almost overkill (e.g. 7 main bearings) and you can make more power and torque than you could ever hope to out of a 215/223/262. Parts availability is much, much better and includes a wide variety of performance pieces. It would also be a easy swap into an "80's F-250" as it may have been original equipment, although I'm not sure how many were made. V-8's were always more popular in the heavier trucks. The 300's were used up to the F-600, maybe the F-700 series trucks in some years so there may be some heavy duty options there. There are a couple of members of this board who've built ridiculous 300's, I can't remember their names offhand. Col. Flashman is one, I think.
You may have to purchase a banged up rusty parts truck just for the engine. Look at every '61-'64 6 cyl. truck for sale, there may be a 262 under the hood without the seller even knowing about it. A standard option on '61-'64 2 ton trucks, a standard option on '64 F 100 F 250 2WD's, was a special order engine on any other '61-'64 model.
Sometimes there not so banged up and rusty and priced right!. Even has those hard to find original 16" solid "innie" rims. Seller shows the B code in vin.
I've got a heavy duty 262 that was running when I pulled it. Already
