but, my local shop stated they have heard of lost of trouble with warranty claims with this company...
Does anyone have any solid recommendation on where to buy a replacement long block? The shop says they usually go through Ford...but that engine is $3022...although it does come with a 3 year/75k mile parts & labor warranty.
Are there that many problems with replacement engines failing or having problems....or is this just something I am hearing from mechanincs due to a couple of bad experiences they have had?
This is RAE - Division of S&S Engine Remanufacturing Company. I bought my 390 longblock from them. They were great. Excellent warranty. I had a leaky freeze plug I called them about. They said to go ahead and replace it and send them the bill. I was reimbursed within two weeks. They built my engine with a hotter than stock cam and double roller timing chain. They will build the engine how you want it. At the time (about 3 years ago) they said I could send them the parts I wanted used in the engine and they would build it. Warranty would not cover those parts but would everything else. Engine continues to run strong. Highly recommended.
Regarding your mechanics comments, he wants you to buy the engine from him, not someone else.
Out of all the large rebuilders they have only a 3% failure rate which is pretty darn good. The FE engines you can get through Ford are not remaned by Ford. They used to be reman in LA by Tomorco up until the mid 90's now they are made by Recon the same company that does Autozones engines.
Stay the heck away! They do not get theirs from the same place their 1800.00 engine is worth about 900.00 its not a full reman but a rebuild/ They reuse pistons and regrind old cams. The last one i got from them came from a place in Ohio Precision Engine Rebuilders. There was no precision and the engine failed 2 months after install and NAPA would not warranty it.
Jasper is good but I don't think the quality of work is any better than S&S so the price is a little high.
Well, in that Case....S & S is sounding like the way to go...I did a search on them online and all of the posted comments I found were good.....The local NAPA here did say their engine has a 3 yr/50k mile warranty and that it came from TX....so perhaps they have several sources they buy from? I dunno...
As for the Jasper Engines....one shop here uses them, and he said they come with the sump, water pump, etc. already on them.....I guess most everything short of the manifolds.....perhaps that is how they justify the higher cost?
They will not take your order until they actually talk with you and the two of you agree on what you (the buyer) want and what they (the seller) will be providing. Eliminates any confusion and makes for a very smooth transaction.
Well, luckily we checked the specs of the S&S Engine...one of the connecting rods had too much side clearance...and the main bearing bolts were only torqued to 60-70 ft-lbs. Needless to say, I arranged for an immediate return of the engine. I decided to pay the extra and go with Jasper's instead.

Those sound like simple warranty issues that S&S would have covered. My 3-yr old S&S engine is going strong with no problems. Did they pay return shipping? Hope the extra cost of the Jasper engine meets your expectations.
To their credit, they did offer a "no-restock fee" return and are paying for the return shipping. But, like I told the guy on the phone...after finding these two glaring oversights, I simply had no confidence in their build....as this is my daily driver work truck and I cannot have excessive downtime to fix and repair what should be a "ready to go" engine. The mechanic at my shop told me several, much worse, horror stories about that company, but I did not listen and went for the low cost....now I have to buy him beer! lol

Must have thought they were doing a small-block Those torque #'s are exactly what the Ford small-block (289/302/351W) calls for ... The FE is 90-105.
My father-in- law has a Jasper engine in his 86 F150. It's a 351 HO and he has told me it runs better and has more power than the original engine ever did even when new. He has only good things to say about it.
