I have a 1977 f250 with a 400 and full time 4x4. I was wondering if the transmission only going into reverse is a problem with the gearshift or the linkage from the steering collem? Any advice would be helpful!!
Edit. I think I got an amazing quote for rebuilding if I took it out and put it back in myself.
This is actually a fairly common C6 problem. It's the seal in the forward clutch. The bad part, to repair it, you need to tear down the whole transmission.
Usually what happens is the trans takes longer and longer to go into gear when its cold. Reverse is fine.
The seal gets hard with age and eventually has trouble sealing. When the trans warms up, it makes the seal a little more pliable so it will finally go into gear, but sooner or later, it will quit going into gear.
Do you think $450 is a good price to have someone rebuild it all new parts and upgraded torque converter? Is there any way to tell if it's something stupid simple that's the issue? Or if its the seal in the transmission?
$450 with a torque converter is almost too good, at least in my area.
As far as testing, I'm not sure that would show up on a pressure test. I think that's the kind of diagnosis that is done using the experience of the technician more than anything else.

Unfortunately the truck isn't in running condition, all it needs is a radiator, fresher oil and water pump and hopefully I rebuilt the carb perfectly! Well the guy says he uses all new parts and gives a 3 year warranty or I think it may be 100000 miles, if I remember correctly. This is in the middle of nowhere, south Dakota hahaha!
