Transmission questions

My 77 F150 (automatic transmission) has a leaking front transmission shaft seal. If I drive it regularly, it leaks less, but let it sit more than 3-4 days and it will really pour out on the driveway (street - wife put an end to driveway parking). Also, even when I top it off, the truck seems to take maybe 30 seconds or a minute in the morning to engage into forward (drive). Reverse is no problem, but it's like the forward gear needs either time to warm up or rev up to 1500 rpm to get going. After that, no problem.

Here's the question:
1. Could a clogged filter cause the issue in the morning?
2. If so and i need to change out the filter, assume my truck has the C6?

i dont know what would cause your problem. but the c4 has an 11 bolt pan, and i believe the c6 has 17.

If you have a C-6, more than likely the forward clutch seal is on it's way out. This seal gets hard and doesn't seal well keeping the forward clutch from applying.
The symptom starts like you described. As the transmission warms up the seal becomes pliable enough to seal. Eventually it will start to take longer and longer to apply as the seal gets harder.
The cure is to tear into it and replace the forward clutch piston seal.

update on the transmission...

Just changed out the filter and drained both transmission and TC. The guy i bought the truck from had been running Type F and the manual calls for Dexron II (1977 was the switchover year). Now here's the interesting thing. The transmission doesn't seem to leak as bad AND it goes into forward gears MUCH easier in the morning. I decided to use Valvoline high mileage Dex III/IV. Is the Dex that much better???
