c6 tranny issues

hello all, this is my first post but i am always reading what others are writing and there is alot of knowlege here i hope i can tap into...

i have a 1976 ford f250 with an autoc6 and it is "full time 4x4" i just bought it knowing there were a few issues but it is a sturdy truck and something i can rely on, it just needs to be taken care of instead of beat on..

in the morining it always falls into R right away but hesitates a minnute or 2 before it will fall into D, i noticed it was 1.5 quts low so i added and still the same effect, not yesterday i brought it in for new brakes and u-joints in the front and it seems to have dripped, spit, or leaked fluid out of where the bellhousing is? one guy told me to get ready for a re-build, but then i checked the fluid, added again to make up for the mess on my floor, and now it falls into R and D but won't propell the truck? is it a clogged filter? torque converter bad? for just F**k it and re-build the whole works?? just looking for more input than the "other guy". thanks in advance!!!

With a C6 chances are (1) front leak: either the front seal is bad or, common on a C6, is the front oil pump o-ring is bad. It could be either. To fix either of them you must pull the trany. (2) This is also a common problem with C6s. The forward clutch seal is bad. It becomes hard and brittle with age. When the trans is cold the seal shrinks slightly and doesn't seal well enough for the clutch to engage. Once it warms up the seal becomes more pliable and seals. This doesn't affect reverse, just forward. Again to fix, you must pull the trans and this time it needs to be torn down to fix.
Sounds like time to rebuild. You MAYBE can stretch it out a little bit by using some trans stop leak but if that works its only temporary and you're just delaying the inevitable.

The simplest thing to do is make sure the shift lever is adjusted correctly. It's possible to have the shifter somewhat "half-way" between stops so to speak. Check the condition of the vacuum line as well.

Second is a full fluid change.

Third is re-adjust the intermediate band.

If none of that works it's rebuild time, especially if the front seal is leaking anyways.

You'll need to tear down both transmissions to swap the tail housings, but it's doable.
