Choosing a new brake proportioning valve

I purchased a set of stainless steel brake lines from Inline Tube. I went to start hooking them up today and ran into problems at the proportioning valve. It looks really bad, is very rusty, and all the fittings were so rusted in place that I was stripping them without loosening anything.

I decided I want to pick up a new proportioning valve to go along with the rest of my new brake setup. An OEM Ford valve is pretty much out of the question because it's around $250. So, I started looking at other options and searching around this forum. Here's what I came up with:

Proportioning Valve - WILD HORSES Early Ford Bronco Parts - $95. Looks pretty high quality. I think the brake light warning switch is included but I'm not positive.

Product Info - $85. Recommended by several people on this forum, and is the same company where I got my brake lines. It indicates something is different with the warning switch and I would have to wire it differently, not sure what the difference is though.

Aftermarket Pro Valve - $59. Looks basically identical to the OEM piece I have. It seems I would also have to buy the warning switch, which I believe JBG has for $26 (Brake Light Warning Switch) which would bring the price to $85.

So, they all end up being pretty close to the same price. But they're all different parts, technically. If I can manage to eventually get all the fittings off of the OEM valve, I won't need to purchase new ones, so that's not a concern yet.

My question is: which valve is the best? I'm leaning towards the first one right now because it seems to be the complete package, but I don't want to pull the trigger without hearing some other opinions first. Thanks for the help!

I am running the one from Wild horses on my 75 F100 4x4. I bought the whole front disc brake kit. It came with the switch but it wires up different than the factory one from what I can remember. It was like 5 or 6 years ago. The one I got started leaking about 8 months after I got it but they sent me a new one for no charge after I sent in the leaking one. It's all brass and has worked fine since then.

This is a good thread. I am converting to 4 wheel disc brakes on my 78 F250. Wild Horses say they have a 4 wheel disc version of that proportioning valve you mentioned. I would also recommend the Wild Horse for your application too. You have already knocked the price down from $240.00 to $95.00. Dirt Racer sounds like he likes his, whats left to decide ? It's what I am going to use in mine.

I guess you're right. Thanks for the common sense reminder. They're all pretty analogous and the Wild Horses one seems to be the best made of the three. I think part of the reason I'm reluctant to pull the trigger is that this minor upgrade I thought I was making is suddenly getting very expensive!

SS brake lines: $200
Prop. valve: $100
Brake hoses: $50-100
way more I haven't even gotten to yet

Once you spend good money for one part, though, it makes no sense to cheap out on another part.

I guess my only question remaining is about the fittings to attach to this valve. Are these readily available fittings I can get at a hobby store or auto store? Or should I just shell out the extra $20 for the Wild Horses fitting set? I'm having a lot of trouble getting the fittings off my stock valve, everything is rusted to hell and back.

IF.... you have salvage yards locally you could probably come up with the fittings, clean them and get by. (Plus maybe a few more bonus items you didn't even know you need, lol)
Time is my friend, I just save an extra month or cut a few corners to provide extra cash for my toys. In my case I don't drive mine everyday so I have the luxury of being able to wait a little longer and do it the way I want instead of the way I can afford it. The down side of that is I don't have to drive so it doesn't always get put back together as soon as it should.

But to answer you question I think $20.00 for the fittings isn't bad. It's a fast food dinner for 2 and a 6 pack of beer, or a table dance, lol.

Not once in this thread did you mention what year and series your truck is, or whether it's 2WD or 4WD.

1973/79 F100/350: There were SIX different proportioning valves. How do you expect ppl to help, when you don't list the info?

Your "About Me" profile says: 1979 F250: There were two different proportioning valves as original.

2WD w/single piston calipers / 4WD: D5TZ2B257B / Available from Ford.

MSRP: $283.30 / FTE sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM price: $203.98.

2WD w/dual piston calipers: D4TZ2B257A / Obsolete

Actually both the D4TZ-A and the D5TZ-2B257-B are now obsolete. Collectors Auto Supply has 22 of the D5TZ-2B257-B in stock.

NumberDummy I like your website " PARTSGUYED.COM ". Lots of info there.

You got that Collectors info off PartsVoice.

EVERY obsolete part Collectors has, they show a quantity of 22! I kid you not. Half the time, they only have one.

Run this p/n on PV: B7TZ5630A to see how many Collectors shows. I just typed this number into the 1961/66 forum.

I only list Collectors as a source if no one else has anything, because they are rude to ppl on the phone, say they will call back..while they check the actual quantity, but do not.

According to the in-house Ford dealer parts locator system, there is PDC status for D5TZ2B257B PDC refers to Ford's Parts Depot's.

I'm not PARTSGUYED, nor an FTE sponsor. Ed is the parts manager of Horizon Ford in Seattle (Tukwila) WA

I'm a retired Ford partsman...sitting in my family room here in LA LA Land looking up and then searching for (mostly) obsolete parts for members.

I didn't mention the year/series/4WD because I'm not looking for an OEM part. I'd much rather pay 40% of the price for a better made aftermarket part. For the aftermarket proportioning valves, they are generally not broken down by year, truck series, or 2WD/4WD. The only distinction they make is whether your brakes are disc/drum or disc/disc. Mine are disc/drum.

Mine still says no stock available, see below.

I have never purchased anything from Collectors Auto, they do come up on Parts Voice. I have Parts International about 2 miles away from me so that is who I usually choose. I also use Green Sales, IF you communicate with them and explain you don't want a NAPA part with a Ford tag on it they usually will give you the one you want or not lie about it.
I'm still looking for a D3TZ-2552144-B roof headliner moulding for my 78 F250 Crewcab. I run it at least twice a week on Parts Voice, somebody someday will have on and I will snag it, lol.
