Hey guys I'm new to the site and I am in need of some assistance on my 86 f250 6.9. I need some wiring diagrams for the alternator. I just bought it off of craigslist and something is wrong with the wiring. The alternator wire is getting red hot. So I need a diagram to show me where factory stuff goes. Thank you
I'd take that alternator into Napa or another place and have it tested. Last time I had an alternator fry the main lead on something, it was shorted internally.
It is that main lead where it meets the alternator that is burning, there is only two wires, the main lead that is going to the relay on the fender, and an orange wire that is going to the electronic regulator. I've added a picture
I suspect the alternator is fried.
Once you have tested it, you'll need to re-wire things. You may also have a fried alternator regulator($28) on top of that.
You will end up with three wires on the alternator -- a big one going between that red terminal and the battery(usually connects to the starter solenoid on the fender well, on the battery side of it), and two smaller wires going from the two-terminal connector to the regulator.
While you are at it, upgrade the wire size of the big wire from the alternator over to the starter solenoid.
I have a snow plow and electric over hydraulic dump bed and an upgrade alternator 150 amps.
I ran a 4 gauge wire to replace the one you are melting, no problems since.
