Hey guys,
I have a 4x4 converted 2001 E350 with the 7.3L diesel. My starter is out and I need to replace it. I'd like to get a new starter that is the "best bang for the buck". I'm looking at either:
In my opinion all aftermarket starters are hit or miss. Names like ACdelco and REMY do not mean anything anymore. I have consistently ordered brands like that and have gotten the same old remans that you would get at any parts store, maybe just in a different box. Personally, I have not really had major issues with 'cheap' starters and alts.
These guys are good to deal with. Many times all they do to a reman starter is replace the bearings that are bad, and the brushes. Then sandblast the case and paint. Well most of the time the only part that fails in the starter is the brushes anyways, usually due to grit.
#2 Find a motor craft starter. Or find a good aftermarket performance starter. Dont know why you would want to go cheap in a 4x4 7.3L E350!
#3 Get the cheapest damn starter you can find.
I think this is the correct one for your 2001 7.3L. $70 and its new (albeit with lower quality guts then OEM) More Information for TYC 106669
-I have used a TYC blower motor before and it was good quality.
The last two starters that failed on me, not Fords, had bad solenoids. It was cheaper to get complete random brand starters than just random brand solenoids so I got complete starters and swapped the solenoids onto the OE starter motors. They've been good for years.
I just get mine rebuilt from the same Auto Electric guy I have been doing business with for 25 years...If he does not have a rebuild he gives me a new one...But they are easy to rebuild ( the gassers)....but I just don't have the time to do it myself....

Wow, mahalo for all the info!
Option #1: I checked out their site and unfortunately they only have an alternator rebuild, not starter for my particular van. Dang!
Option #2: I'd pay more, but I do have to answer to my wife
I always research out products and look for the ones that are the "best bang for your buck", in that it's a product that performs like the expensive ones but costs less.
Option #3: I learned long ago to not go cheap...it almost always costs more in the long run...LOL
I'm leaning towards finding a local shop to rebuild (shipping parts to Hawaii sucks!) or getting one of the 2 I listed (I did research and they seem to be decent options). I'm hoping that someone has experience with either of these two...

Ya, that sounds like a good idea. What's the best way to test to see if it's the solenoid vs the starter?

Out here in Hawaii, I'm very limited. Either parts are expensive to ship and/or it is difficult to find a good mechanic. Amazon is killer because of the free shipping. I'll look around though to see what my options are locally. Mahalo!
I agree with you about not going cheap, just frustrating when you pay $100 more for something due to perceived quality and you get the same cheap part.
If you are running the stock Ford starter I would definitely find a rebuilder. Email the rebuild place too, sometimes online catalogs are wrong. Probably the same starter for all 7.3L, or atleast the same guts.

In both cases, the solenoid wasn't pushing the Bendix gear to the flywheel (no click) so I suspected the solenoid. True enough, when I opened the solenoid, the magnet came out in pieces.
