Well the day has come and i finnally got th old 223 back in my 58! the problem is this, we went to turn it over and it seemed a bit sluggish. after priming the carb and giving it a shot of ether we went to turn it over again ant it just clicked. the obvioys problem was the starter so we jumped from the bat to the starter and nothing... i'm going to have it rebuilt but does anyone know who sells a high torque starter for this engine? or anyone who sells a starter in case this rebuild fails? Anyhelp would be appreciated. Thanks jax
Did you by chance repaint everything? Make sure all your grounds are clean and tight. If you don't have one, put a ground cable from the motor to the frame. it's a good idea to have the starter checked, but don't neglect the grounds.
If your 58 uses the same starter as the 48-52 series you can usually get a rebuild from your local Napa Auto Parts. They're a bit pricy. If they don't have it in stock the regional distribution warehouse will. BTW - I have no affiliation with Napa, just spent time in a few bringing my F6 home from Minnesota to Seattle.
I had a similar problem with the starter on my '48 239. I found a local shop that specializes in anything with coil windings. They did a complete rebuild with high-torque coils, new bendix and starter gear for the cost of a rebuild from Napa.
After putting the starter back in it worked fine once and then stopped. I scraped the newly painted rim to ensure proper ground, checked solenoid and everything else and finally found the wire clip at the starter button was coated. A quick cleanup and everything works fine now.
