7.3 PSD tach not working (and other gauges) Trans not shifting - but, runs fine...

It's a 2002 4wd automatic.

Like the title says, the truck starts and runs perfect. The transmission is not shifting correctly (or at all actually - I'll get to that). The tach does not move except to peg out and return to zero when key is turned on. Also, the WTS light stays on, the oil pressure gauge does not work and the trans temp does not appear to be working.

I have inspected every plug on the wiring harness multiple times, I have swapped in another cluster and even tried (3) different PCM's at this point. At one point, I had a bad fuse box - but the truck had the same symptoms with that box. All fuses are good.

The only codes I'm getting with AE are:

P0381 - glow plug indicator circuit
P0603 - KAM error
p1139 - water in fuel indicator circuit

The transmission will go into 2nd gear if I put it in "1" and it goes into 4rth when put in "D". I have ohmed out the shift solenoid and it appears to be OK?

I have access to wiring diagrams and will be studying those. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Can't say for sure.... But, some of your symptoms are here:

Trucks with the 4R100 Automatic Transmissions (1999.5 -2003 MY) which present with a "No Accelerator Pedal accompanied by a No Gauge

Activity". Circuits: "N250, C212, 20140, 2135, 281a, and 220c" and Fuse #45 in the Under Dash Fuse Panel.

Most Probable Cause: Wire chafing in the steering column coat clutch on/off switch (Overdrive).

Repair: Remove Steering Shaft Decorative Coverings and inspect the wiring for chafing. Covering any exposed wiring with a suitable insulating product to prevent a reoccurrence.

Hope this assists you.

Tom

Thanks Tom, that is a very common problem. I have fixed a number of these over the years and I've seen some weird symptoms. I did inspect the OD button wire and did not see chafing, but I'm gonna try unplugging it for the heck of it.

What I'd like is the factory service manual instructions for the indicator circuit codes, but the only 'puter I have that is old enough to run the versions I have won't work anymore.........

I had some symptoms like that back in spring. It was the digital transmission range sensor, commonly called the "neutral safety switch."

That looks like the MAP sensor hose. Trace three other side. It should plug into a nipple on the intake manifold. If so, it is indeed the MAP sensor.

Absolutely necessary sensor. It measures the intake boost pressure. I guess you could try glueing the nipple back on the sensor, but who knows with that.

Wow, that was over a year ago??? Where does the time go???

Well, I'm glad this thread was dug up. I hate in when people don't come back and tell us if we helped them!!

I went to a neighbor's small shop who has IDS - the Ford diagnostic tool/software. They eventually figured out I was using a PCM from a 2001 F450 with a 6spd. I sourced the correct PCM and it was all good!

So the PCM noticed that some parts were missing and went into shutdown?????

Was this a project truck or a customers rig?

The manual trans PCM is coded to turn off the transmission control. That PCM won't know that there is a transmission out there looking for input.

This was a truck I built for a customer. The cab and chassis was a 5.4 gas truck I swapped a 7.3 into. I moved out of the shop I was working out of during this build and not only 'lost' a ton of parts, apparently some of my parts got swapped in the process...

I saw this truck yesterday. Customer is still very happy with it!!

Like Mark said, the 6spd PCM doesn't even know there is a 4R100 to command... Since I had access to IDS, I probably could have reflashed the PCM to an auto trans - but it was the wrong family PCM. A $450 PCM solved the problem.

It's all good! I'm glad ya did so I could add the requisite closure!

I've had issues replying to the wrong thread on my mobile. Ya gotta pay attention to 'which' reply you hit. On mine, 'related threads' are at the bottom of the page and there is an option to reply to them.
