Hello all, I have been having an issue with my ignition switch sticking in the ON position after cranking & the only way to turn it off is to use channellocks. I tried to search for the issue & came up with threads on replacing the switch cylinder & other related steering column issues. More offsite research found that I may have a broken upper actuator, But i couldn't find a detailed description on how to fix the problem. I have replaced the switch cylinder and still had the same issue, so I know its not the switch itself. I also added graphite to rule out a dry switch. Has anyone here had the same issue? Did I miss the thread/video on how to tear down the steering column to get this fixed? Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
Getting stiff and hard to turn in cold weather is common along with have to turn the key back by hand to the correct position so everything works after it starts is common also.
Have to take channel locks to turn it back is not common. Is this a tilt wheel column? If it's not, you could not have the actuator problem, it's only on tilt wheels and it really presents a different problem than what you are having. Like I said, yours is not a common problem.
Franklin2, It's only been doing this for about 3 weeks now & the temps have been between 85 & 100 degrees, so the cold weather is out. This is not a tilt steering wheel & the majority of Youtube videos I saw were for fixing the tilt models. Not sure what the difference would be. Because the part is located under the tilt mechanism. So it should be the same.

Reason: Forgot to add an explanation
They are not the same, you do not have the common actuator problem because a non-tilt column is different.
The only thing I could take a guess at would be a problem with the steering wheel lock. Without the channel locks, try and wiggle the steering wheel back and forth while turning the key back. If it's automatic, you could also try wiggling the shifter lever while turning the key. If it's a manual and you have the little white button underneath, try playing with that while turning the key back.
Ok I checked the auto shifter to make sure it was all the way in park & also checked moving the steering wheel while trying to turn the switch to the off position & both seem to have no effect on the problem. The switch engages & cranks the motor fine, but hangs in the on position & will not turn back. I've tried wiggling the switch, angling the key up & down, also pulling/pushing the key itself in/out of the switch & the key will not budge, along with the switch, it will not rotate at all. I'm at a loss I guess, until I tear into the steering column & see what is hanging/missing. Thanks for the help so far.
Update; I recently talked with my mechanic & was told it was the Ignition switch that's attached to the steering column( not the ignition cylinder/key switch). I bought a Standard & after a bunch of swear words from not being able to see what I was doing, she starts fine with no sticking. Hope this helps anyone else with the same issue.
