I have a problem with my ignition switch. I went to start the truck today and when I turned the switch, I heard a little pop and then it went limp and wouldn't start the truck. I can turn it off and to acc. mode but I can't get it to start the truck. I have to turn it all the way to make it into "Run". I can get the truck started by pushing the rod with my fingers that runs along the top of the steering column and is connected to the ignition switch. But when I get the truck started, I can't get it into gear.
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need my truck tommarow!
I don't know how to get the the steering column unlocked so you can get it in gear(I assume it is automatic with the shifter on the column), but I do know that ford needs a new supplier for ignition switches, because I know over 10 fords between family and friends that had the ignition switch break.
Since it works by pushing the little rod, then it's not the ignition switch but the key mechanism behind the steering wheel. The little rod engages the ignition switch which is mounted on top of the column behind the dash.
Sounds like you have a mechanical failure behind the steering wheel inside the column. I have never had any fun pulling a steering wheel and working inside the column.
That's a common problem on tilt columns - the mechanism that links the lock cylinder (where the key goes) to the ignition switch (inside the dash on top of the column) is made of pot metal, which fatigues over time & breaks. Look at the diagrams here and e-mail me if you need the big versions.
I finally figured out what happened to my truck. The actuator rod broke and I'm having on heckofatime trying to get the broked piece out. Also, I don't see how the heck I'm gonna be able to get the new one in. The fit's too tight. What ELSE do I have to disassemble on this friggen thing...I'll post pictures in a minute
sounds like a bad key switch.Replacing it is easy.pop the cover off the steering wheel by taking off the screws on the back (theres 2 i think). You then have to take the wheel off. to do this you can make a puller by taking a piece of flat stock and drilling holes to match thoes which hold the wheel in place.when you pull off the wheel you will see the key cylinder.i think you turn the key to run then push in a little button and then you can pull out the whole key switch. this will fix your problem.
