Question for owners of 4-speeds
I am putting a clutch in my F350 right now and when I get it back together, I have a new rubber floor mat and a new shift boot. When I got the truck, the original floor mat was gone so hence my question - the boot screws down to the transmission cover, does it go on top of the rubber mat (meaning the screws go thru the mat)? Or does it screw directly to the trans cover and the the mat goes over on top?

Thanks for the search, orangeford. I really did not think this would have come up before so I did not search.
I think I prefer the boot under, and I *think* I have seen it this way before back in the day with a slit from the hole in the mat up to the front edge so that the mat can be separated to remove the boot so the shifter can be pulled. However, I cannot remember if this was on my uncle's '72 Ford (Dad's side = Ford), or on my other uncle's '72 Chevy (Mom's side = Chevy). Both were red 1/2 tons with SWB flairside/stepside beds, white headache racks and white grille guards, kinda cool they both had same truck basically except one Ford and one GM. But that's another thread...

Originally or as I have always seen it, boot first then the floor mat, then the chrome rings mount with tabs that bend and sort of clamp to the mat or carpet.
Or boot first, then carpet, then again the chrome ring that clamps to the carpet.
The PO of my blue truck did carpet first, then the boot....FAIL.
So NO real good way to mount the rings....
