Where to put Pyrometer Probe?

I have an Edge scan Guage that came with EGT probe and connector. I've seen some put the probe in driver side exhaust manifold, and others in the downpipe after the turbo. The downpipe makes more sense to me, but the instructions say to use the manifold.

Any experienced pros and cons as to which location is better for monitoring EGTs?

I have both, manifold is where you want the probe for what you are doing.

EGT is about 400 degrees cooler in the down pipe than in the exhaust manifold. 1350 max in the manifolds, 950 max in the downpipe. I think most go manifold. Plenty of posts on how to do it on here. I did my own 7 years ago, no issues.

Take your time, find the sweet spot, and use grease on the drill bit to catch the shavings.... wear safety glasses.

He's not kidding about the safety glasses. I got a small metal shaving in my eye when I did mine, even though I was "being careful". VERY painful. I ended up using tweezers to get it out. Even if your face isn't close to where you are drilling, those shavings can go further than you would think.

I also installed mine in the manifold.

I just got the same edge product and was going to ask the same question, because my biggest worry of doing it on the truck is not getting all the metal out of the manifold and messing up my turbo, MooSSe your not alone

What I did to prevent most of the shavings from going into the manifold was simply dip the drill bit in heavy grease. It catches most, but all of the shavings. for the shavings that ended up in the manifold, I used a strong magnet and coaxed the rest of the shavings out of the hole I drilled by dragging the magnet along the manifold, toward the hole. It worked great. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little nervous when I first started the truck back up, but all was well.

I always put them in the manifold inline with a port to get the highest temperature that's closest to what the piston tops are feeling. Lay under the truck on the driver's side and look straight up at exhaust port for cylinder #8. When I drill them, I run the engine and the exhaust pressure ensures all chips to blow out while drilling.

Yes, let her idle while you drill, start with a small bit, then up to the correct NPT size for the probe. the low exhaust pressure will blow all the shavings out. Again, wear safety glasses and do it outside, you will be eating some diesel exhaust. It doesnt take long, dont press to hard on the drill, you are drilling a cast manifold. The probe needs to go up the tube leading from the exhaust port so that you get the probe right into the hottest exhaust stream as per above posts.

Thanks for all the advice. Looks like it will be the manifold.
I just saw an episode of GearZ with Stacey David. He took the manifold off before drilling.
Wish I had a shop like his. LoL
