Where to put it,what ive seen on you tube and read varying places,some put it on the exhaust manifold and some put it on the downpipe just of the turbo,does it matter that much ????

 

Either the manifold or the up-pipe is good. I have mine on the up-pipe.

 

As I understand it, you want the probe to be where it most closely monitors an average, or median of all eight cylinders exhaust temperatures. For one probe, that would be at the rear bottom of the drivers side exhaust manifold.

 

Most put it in the manifold as it will support the threads if using a threaded style pyrometer probe. Another good reason to have it before the turbo is the air is hotter there than after the turbo. The maximum temp you want to see is around 1300 degrees. If you are taking the EGT post turbo, you will have to lower that number to more like 1100 degrees as the air is cooler by the time it gets there.

Either way works and it is up to you.

Here is where I put mine in the drivers side manifold. Good access and easy to drill/install there.

 

I ask because i put mine exactly where woodnthings has put his,and ive seen that others have put there's on the downpipe,just asking wether i put it in the right place..... Ok thanks fella's....

I used the clamp style in the up pipe because i didn't want to drill my manifold.It's a little easier and works just fine.

 

How do you do that? I thought you still had to drill a hole, just didn't have to tap it?

 

you do have to drill a hole just not in the manifold.You drill the hole in the up pipe and the clamp holds the probe in the hole.

 

You can put me down in the manifold column to! Drilling and taping pretty straight forward!! JUST TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!

I am new to this. I don't know what is normal. I bought a 2001 F350 that has a chip in it. The pyrometer usualy read 600 at 70 MPH. I will look tomorrow to see were it was installed.

 

I just installed a Pyro for another FTE member this weekend and I drilled and tapped the driver's side exhaust manifold. Pretty easy if you have a couple of drill bits that step up to the size plus the tap. My pyro on my truck is on the up-pipe but either way will get you a good location to install the thermocoupler. If you lay down underneath the truck on the driver's side and look up (right where the oil filter is), you will see the location where you need to drill for either install. One thing about Clay's (RiffRaff Diesel) is he has the drill and tap kit ready to go if you need the correct stuff.
