I am installing a dp tuner and need recomendation for an EGT set up. What's better to go with : in the pipe or in the manifold (pre or post turbo?) ? And where would the thermocouple be easily installed for either choice ? Thanks.
Look underneath the truck at the rear of the driver's side exhaust manifold. From there you can either drill and tap the manifold, or you can drill and clamp to the uppipe just above the manifold. Either location will work fine, and it all depends on your own personal preference and/or tools available. If you have a tap and die set, might as well go into the manifold.
You can spike it way hotter than the ~1220* melting point of aluminum because it takes a while for the heat to soak in and start melting a piston. DON'T keep it there long, and staying below ~1220* is always smart. However, I have spiked mine hotter than that while in the "heat" of battle, but only long enough to show the Dodge or Chebby who's boss...
You can let the EGT climb as high as you want, 1500+, however on stock injectors it will take a long time to get there if you even can. I hit 1375 doing a burnout once, and it was fine because about 5 seconds later i was out of it idling. If you are towing you won't want anything over 1250 sustained, however you can sustain that temperature for as long as you want. I put stage one injectors and DP tuner in my 95 dump truck, and i installed gauges. Hauling 5000 pounds of salt it easily bent the EGT past 1500* going up a hill and i wasnt worried because that was for a few seconds.
ok, i got an "Auto Meter" brand egt meter from Checker Auto Parts and installed it in the manifold as instructed. $155.00 for the meter. i guess that and my newly installed dp tuner will get me by for now. thanks for everyones help/suggestions.
