Starter issues - straight start v. gear reduction

Gotcha, spur to spur. The DBE ones are three spur IIRC. Not that it really matters since the first and last gears set the reduction. Well other than direction changes, that is.
Ack! That means my comparison isn't valid. The only planetary (lower in your pic) style I have seen in action was half dead- pretty sure it was running on only one of the two set of brushes.
