Can i go get a gear reduction starter and put it on my truck and not have any issues? I've heard both ways and want to make sure it's okay before i go get one tomorrow. Thanks guys!
ya, i have a Jap starter on now that went to hell, the third one, and it may be a gear reduction i have but not sure how to tell. I'll do some research.
Pretty sure they are all a gear reduction. The mitsu and Nip are and I beliee the delcos.
If possible I would go with the Nip. The contacts are the only thing to repace under normal wear. I've built a many of those starters over the years and I HATE a delco with a passion....
On a gear reduction starter, the motor is offest from the shaft with the gear. I think cost is a reason not everyone uses them, the gear reduction starters are a bit more expensive.
The price of the mitsu starters have come way down, I don't think there is much difference in the price. I think if you flop a delco down on the desk and the parts store stocks it they will most likely hand you one. At some point didn't ford quit handling delco I know my 85 came with the mitsu starter, maybe the delcos held up better on the 83 and 4 lower compression motors.
Did these motors always come with a gear reduction starter? I was checking out the starters at work last night and the GR starters were all we had for my truck. An Ultima brand and some other brand, but said it was a reman mitsu starter.
