Leaking rear diff

While under the truck the other day, I discovered that what I thought was a leak from the rear diff cover is actually a leak from the bearing (?) or seal (?) where the drive shaft enters the diff.

...will it be cheaper to replace the rear axle or tear apart the diff and replace the bearing/seal?

The pinion seal is only around $12 and the new crush sleeve is another $10ish.... U must get a inch pound gauge and take a measurement with the old parts on then install new seal and crush sleep tighten and check inch pound reading. Go a little at a time till it goes back to where it was if you go more than the original reading you will have to buy another crush sleeve and start over. It's not very hard at all

Sean did a write up here a few years ago. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...nion-seal.html
This is what I used when I installed a new pinion seal in my leaky 4.88 axle housing before I swapped it under my EX.

Gee Rob, that old age thing must be creeping up if you're starting to have rear-end leakage... next step will be stocking up on geriatric Depends! (so I've heard)

Replacing the pinion seal itself isn't too bad. I would definitely do that rather than buying a used rear end that you don't know anything about. It is probably less than 30 dollars of parts for the seal, crush sleeve, and pinion nut. If you don't want to do it, I would think a shop wouldn't even charge too much for something like that.
