The pinion seal is leaking on my 2001 navigator, I am going to take it to a transmission shop that I have dealt with before to have it fixed but my question is is their any other seals I should have them replace while this is being done? for preventative maintenance and because the full synthetic gear oil is expensive and I do not want to pay extra if another seal breaks.
obviously the rear diff cover seal will need to be replaced but are their any others I should be replacing?
There would be no other seals to replace when doing a pinion seal. The diff cover does not need to come off for any reason to replace this seal. The mechanic I learned from taught me to put RTV on the pinion splines to prevent gear lube from coming up those splines. When I did mine I initially used RTV black and the lube got passed it. I resealed the pinion splines with RTV gray and have been leak free for 2+ years now. Just a suggestion to mention to who ever does the job.
The only other seals on the rear end are the diff seal and the 2 axle seals as mentioned. The axle seals take more work to replace and have nothing to do with the pinion seal. I wouldn't replace the other seals just because the pinion seal is being done. The others don't fall into the "while I'm in there" catagory.
That being said, you might find that the axle seals let go after the pinion seal is fixed. This happened to me. I personally wouldn't worry about this but it would be something to keep an eye on.
Also make sure the vent tube for the rear end is not plugged up as this can lead to seal failure as well........so I read.
Here is my thread from when I was dealing with the pinion seal:
