Rear end leaking grease around the seal on the differential seal

I have grease leaking on the rearend on the differential seal. I've never opened a differential bell before, I was wondering what I need to know prior to opening the bell and replacing the gasket. What do I need to be aware of prior to opening and is there anything I need to be aware to ensure I get back together correctly. Any and all assistance is appreciated.

The seal can be replaced without removing center or bearing retainer. If its a solid sleeve type just replace seal and re-assemble. Even if a crushed sleeve and done right you can get away with seal only. Just remember to put something on splines of yoke so it does not leak past.

You HAVE to measure the pinion preload prior to removing the pinion nut (assuming it’s a 9 inch with a crush sleeve). When re installing the nut, you should torque it in small increments until you’re back at the previously measured pre load. Not a hard job; but, if you don’t do it right you could destroy the diff. Easiest way to do this is by removing the pinion housing; it’s only 5 or 6 bolts. No need to remove the axle shafts; but, you’ll need new diff fluid, a pinion housing o ring, and a pinion seal.

this should give you an idea of the process:

Thanks for the response. When you say put something on the splines can you explain what you mean?

a bead of silicone around the pinion splines. I always use ultra black. Others will say use grey, supposedly better formulated for gear oil.
