Hey guys! This post will have to double as my intro post!
I've got a 2000 Excursion V10. Love it. I bought it, though, with 170k miles on it and I'm going through it and fixing what needs to be fixed.
Looking at the tranny, I can't tell if it needs attention or not. It drives fine, takes off, cruises, all that. The only thing is, when driving I'm going along in 4th, if I let off the gas and then lightly get back on, it'll kind of hesitate. You hear the engine rev up for a split second, then the transmission grabs and the rpms drop back down to normal. Note, the rpms never rev more than 2 or 3 hundredn rpm before it grabs again.
I was just wondering if that sounds okay to you guys?
The fluid looks red and doesn't smell burned or anything.
I just wanna know if I need to start saving my money for a rebuild or not.
Also, when the time comes, does anyone know about Monster transmissions? I plan to buy a reman'd 4R100 from them when the time comes.
Thanks! This is a great forum for first time X owners like me.
Helped a friend put one in his F250 and 3 days later helped him take it back out. He was having issues with them covering the transmission under warranty. He had a local guy rebuild his old one and we put that back in. Never asked what ever happened over the warranty issue.
Helped my cousin put one in his 2000 turbo charged Chevy 1500.... Two weeks later we pulled it out. They returned his money (he had to pay to send it back) and he got a "real" trans shop to rebuild his OEM transmission

It's completely normal.
When you let off the gas the torque converter unlocks. It will relock a second or so after you get back on the gas. That causes the 200-300 RPM flare. A rebuilt trans will do the same thing, this is in the programming. It's working as designed.

I'm guessing that Mark is correct, he did help program the things and probably has some insider knowledge. Good quick response though!!
