Hopefully this isn't a very big deal...please advise if it is. I was under the truck and noticed a dribble of gear lube on the meatball housing...it was coming from the front seal between the axle and front of rear diff. What do you think? I was planning to change the Rear diff cover to the newer version and change the gear fluids anyway...but is there something more? How do I change the front seal (if needed)...could it be a blocked vent tube...I'll check that in the morning. Has anyone ever changed the front seal to their rear diff housing? BTW, I drove the truck 45 miles then checked the Rear Diff housing temp (it was 101 F...is this normal)? Tonight's outside ambient temp was 47 F
It's the pinion seal. I had mine replaced by the dealer a couple months ago. It took them an hour to do it. I didn't feel like laying on my back in the driveway to do it which is why I brought it in. You have to unbolt the driveshaft at the universal where it enters the diff. You can slide the spline shaft out the front without pulling any gears. I would suggest replacing that seal before changing the fluid.
Thanks everyone for the feedback. So I'll treat it like the TSB that talks about the Slip Joint Re-Greasing...pull the shaft and put in the new seal...check the vent tubes and re-grease the driveshaft spines...bolt it all back up, go to the opposite side remove old diff cover, thoroughly inspect gears and clean, install new diff cover add 3.5 qt of Mobil 1 75w-140 with some friction modifier and I should be good to go?
The new diff cover I'm talking about is the ones being added as OEM on all '08 +...the part number is 8C3Z-4033-A depending on which dealer you order from price ranges between $50-$75 Its all cast alluminum and can help lower rear diff temps...and looks cool.
