I realize this is a topic of much debate. I found an autozone oil that is Mercon compatible but not mercon V compatible. I am apprehensive to use a generic oil in my truck but its all I can find. The other option is Valvoline mercon V compatible. I dont have an owners manual but the repair manual says to not use mercon V compatible oil. Also the dip stick says Mercon. I guess while im asking about my tranny, I drained the fluid and it literally smells like sewage. Not overwhelming but its there. . . . And the drain plug wont come out. Is that actually a drain plug or just a bolt to hold the magnet in place? Thanks.
Mercon V is backwards compatible, and I would personally recommend Valvoline over a non-branded oil which is not up-to-date with its specifications (Mercon only).
MERCON V is the recommended fluid for a 2002 4R100. It wasn't that way when the truck was built, but MERCON V has changed since then and now is the right stuff.
It depends on your definition of "sewage". I've never though of ATF to be much of a favorable fragrance. I gage it on color (is it still red or has it turned dark) and if it smells burnt. I'm no mechanic (although I do pretend to be one in my driveway on a regular basis) so I'm sure Mark will have a better professional take on it. Where are you smelling it? Under the truck will have a stronger smell than sitting in a tub in the middle of the driveway. I've been using Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF since I bought my truck and have not had any transmission issues to date (knock on wood).

On my 4x4 it is a drain plug. The magnet is a small donut that sits around the drain plug on the bottom of the pan.
turns out the drain plug "nut" is pressed on the pan and the press is nolonger holding. Ill just pretend it dosent have a drain plug. It dosent leak It smells like sewage on my hand and from the tail shaft. It only smells burnt after it dried on my hand. Not a strong burnt smell at all. Ill prolly switch to synthetic later. this ******* has cost me too much already. Figured 10 grand would buy a truck you could just drive for a while. . . . WRONG! I noticed it while I was removing the pan after the tranny was out of the vehicle. Theres no other word for it than sewage. like opening a septic tank but not as strong.
