Mercon V In M5OD?

A buddy of mine had 4 quarts of Castrol Mercon V Auto Transmission Fluid sitting around and he gave it to me.Since I'm changing my oil tomorrow,I figure that I might as well drain the transmission fluid also. Will that Mercon V be adequate for my 5 Speed M5OD?

Thanks for any insight.

you definatly need mercon III NOT V. my manual said that damage can result from the Mercon V. Mercon V is for newer vehicle applications.

I think Mercon V will be fine in a manual tranny......You just need to stick to recommended ATFs (Mercon or Mercon V) in automatic trannies......

It says in my Haynes manual...Mercon Automatic Transmission Fluid...That's all it says.I think that I'll give the V a shot and if it doesn't work,I'll drain it and add Mercon-Dexron III.What will be the signs if it won't work in my transmission?Hard shifting, roaring, gear grinding, etc.?

I think that I have all of my gear to do this job.I bought one of those tubes at AZ to get to those hard-to-reach places. What size is the drain plug on the M5OD?I figure that I'll take about an hour and do this tomorrow afternoon.I changed my oil last night and everythng went perfectly .

Any more opinions on the Mercon V?

Thanks fellas.

In my 1983-1992 Haynes Ford Ranger & Bronco II Repair Manual,it states the following in Chapter 1:

Manual Transmission Lubricant Type
1983 through 1987.........................SAE 80W Standard Transmission Lubricant
1988-on
Mitsubishi Transmission....................SAE 80W Standard Transmission Lubricant
Mazda Transmisson.........................MERCON Automatic Transmission Fluid

That's straight from the book.I think what I'm going to do is this...Drain my current fluid and replenish it with the 4 qts. of Mercon V that I have now. Then, get out and drive it for about 20 miles and see what happens. If it doesn't work just as good or better than it does now,I'll drain it and add Mercon III.If it works fine,I'll leave it alone.Either way,I'll let you guys know.

el conquistador - I'm not contradicting what you're saying. But,if I conduct this test myself, then I'll know for sure. Then,we'll both know whether or not to put Mercon V in our M5OD's .

Thanks again.

I concur with Bob. I think you'll be OK with Mercon V in the manual tranny. IMO, if you like the way it feels during the trial period, then go ahead and stick with it.

Well boys, the Mercon V is in.Boy...WHAT A MESS!!.I had about a quart of this stuff all over my garage floor before I managed to get it all in the transmission. At least I know what not to do the next time I change my transmission fluid.Anyway, that's all cleaned up.I drove the truck up town and back for a total of about 15 miles. All I can say is this...I LOVE IT!!The transmission shifts smoother than ever, but it does still 'roar' a little like it did before. But,at least it does shift smoother. The noise doesn't really bother me anymore.

I'm going to post a new thread on how to change the fluid in the M5OD since I don't believe Ken has an article on it.I figure that it will help some folks out since I've been there and done that now .

Thanks again fellas.Ya'll are the best .

if it is the mazda tranny then change to mercon but if it is mitsubishi then gear oil is recommended.

If you put gear lube in a transmission that specified ATF, there might be some damage to the needle bearings in the transmission. Auto manufacturers started using ATF in manual transmissions because of the smaller tolerances and smaller bearings that were used to quiet down and smooth out the operation of the gearbox. Some transmissions actually have small passages that the fluid has to flow through to reach certain parts of the transmission (such is the case with the Borg-Warner T-5), and the thicker gear lube just can't make it through those small passages.
