Check Engine P0171 P0174 Codes

Coming home from spring break towing the TT, the Check Engine light illuminates. Seems to be sputtering at idle, but otherwise OK, so we continued home.

Scanner lists the P0171 and P0174 codes. Ok, where to begin? based on internet info, started by cleaning the MAF sensor and throttle body. When I pulled apart the intake, noticed that the grommet which feeds the MAF in the air intake had become separated letting air bypass the MAF. Hence the reason for the codes.

If you get these codes, check the grommet for the wires feeding the MAF in the air intake to make sure it hasn't become separated from the intake. No more codes.

Thank you

Always glad to help.

FYI, specifics on my X: 2005, V-10, 123,000 miles. This was the first time the check engine light has come on.

Any chance you took photos when you did this?

I am going to attempt this this weekend.

Nick, what is it that you are planning to do? Are you getting the same symptoms and codes as vjstangelo reported? Or are you planning on just cleaning your MAF?
If MAF cleanup is your goal, then Sean has a nice picture writeup how-to here. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...eanup-day.html It's an easy job, I've done it a few times now.

I have a paper Motorcraft on order, gonna dump the K&N with new clean kit, but no piping, it goes in the stock filter housing on a V10.

I'd rather change the filter than clean the filter & MAF now that I see what is involved. My X came with the K&N.

I had that little grommet pop loose on me too, came out several times on a ski trip. Adjusted the way the wires were routed around the MAF, and then for good measure wrapped some duct tape around it, lol. No more issues.
