Now I just replaced it on Saturday 12/30/06, reset the codes and drove the truck (F150 4.2L 2001) a few times maybe going a total of 30 miles and I do stress maybe. Now after just having driven to the corner market my Service Engine Soon light comes on again. I'm extremely upset that the codes will tell me it's the MAF again (codes p0171 and p0174 I believe).
Here's my question to all of you fine folk out there. Is it possible for massive amounts of tiny leaves, dust and tree sap to accumulate enough to cause the MAF to deliver the codes again? You see, my truck is parked outside and under a very annoying tree that constantly spits sap, leaves and debris constantly. I live in Phoenix, AZ so the fall lasts a long time. I've cleaned the MAF, reset the codes, replaced the MAF and reset the codes and still to no avail. Please help me with any and all experiences on this matter. Sorry for the length of the post.
If you have the 171 and 174 codes, it has little to do with the Mass Air meter.
So working on that won't clear the real fault.
Better to look real good for an air leak into the..intake..from bad hoses or whatever allows "unmetered" air to enter the intake.
This is detected by the OX sensors that richen up the fuel tables trying to 'fix' the fault it cannot fix.
This action sets the..codes..for both..banks..since it will be common.
The 'lean' discription is referring to the computer tables shift and not really what the..engine..is, even though the fault began at the intake.

Very interesting. I was looking at the chart the Autozone guy was using and the exact recommendation for those two codes is to clean/replace the MAF. So when you mean the hose(s) that come into the air intake before it hits the throttle body right?
