Automatic Transmission quit
We have a 02 explorer with the 5R55W transmission.
We lost power starting up a hill. Now it has nothing. No reverse, forward.
Does not even think about moving an inch.
We can not find the dip-stick. Looks like a nut on top of the transmission that you stick a finger into or makeshift dipstick to see if it is topped up.
It probably has a cooler on it.
Never noticed a loss of fluid. Nothing at the bottom of the hill...
Any help is greatly appreciated
Kind Regards
James
Look for a large nut with a plug in the middle. Remove the plug, with the transmission in park and engine running fluid should be dripping from the hole. Ford makes a special adapter to add fluid but I squirt it in using a quart bottle with a nozzle tip pressed against the hole. Use only Mercon V fluid. If you see no signs of leakage and this happened suddenly I'd suspect internal problems though.
I suspect internal. Question is, torque converter or internals.
Think the reality is that when it stops working, the TCS or ESS would quit individually not as a set.
Powering up a hill seems like a converter, but...
We are a long way from a shop, almost 8 hr.
There are two converters so we may need to pull this one to get a replacement.
$450 at the parts places
$110 at rockauto... humm
guess if it is a test the $110. A lot of work for a test.
Transmissionpartsusa.com has a kit, I used it to rebuild my 4R55E (same kit) and it's reasonably priced. I got the manual off ebay for about $12, kit was around $150 with a shift improver, and the result lasted two years of lots of miles including towing a couple 1800-mile trips. It was still going strong when I sold it over a year ago, and I see it running around town from time to time.
Automatic transmissions aren't as scary as some people think, generally if you can read, read a micrometer, and can pull the thing, you're able to rebuild it.
got
0705 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit malfunction
0715 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
0720 Output Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
0745 Pressure Control Solenoid Malfunction
wonder if that is more electronic, or could a pump do that
Transmissionpartsusa.com has some good stiff.
Up here in the Great White North, shipping is tough.
I am going to go through the wiring and connectors pronto
keep ya posted
Kind Regards
James
