trailer running lights always on!

hi all and thanks in advance for any advice offered.I have a 2005 ford f250 with the factory installed brake controller and towing package, until recently all was well,I tow a fairly large travel trailer and last time I hooked the trailer to the truck I noticed the running lights on the trailer were lit,I checked to make sure that I did not have the parking lights turned on or the headlights. I did find posts about the running lights not working and was surprised to find there is a relay somewhere on the central junction fuse block that was integral to the cfb and not user serviceable.could my problem be that this relay failed in the closed position or am I not going in the right direction in my quest to find this problem. Also could someone post a diagram of where this relay is located on the cental junction fuse block?I would also consider doing a work around solution rather than having to replace the entire fuse block.

My guess is you have a bad ground, or a hot side wire is grounded somewhere, the latter of which i think is more likely.

Do you know someone with another trailer you could hook up to?

That would narrow down whether the fault is in the truck or the trailer.

It will be later today before I can get you diagram.
2005 F250 what engine?

I'll post the relays and fuse locations. Only one problem
I can think of. I have the 03,04,06,07 but not the 05
disk. But it should work for what you need.

thanks, the truck has the 6.0 ltr diesel.I already checked all the grounds, the problem is I always have 12 volts present on the 7 pin on the truck that powers the running lights. any other info is greatly appreciated, but this problem is not related to the trailer.I read that there is a non serviceable relay on the central junction fuse block,I really don't want to spend $ 200 to replace this part only to find I still have the problem.

Here is the diagram for the 2006 trailer/camper adapter.
Be sure to check the wires out to make sure that they are the same.

From what I see the relay is part of the CJB (in the cab)
One place to find a used one would be on Ebay.

You might also check with Ed over at FICMRepair.com - FORD Powerstroke 6.0 FICM Repair, PHP Tuning and Truck Parts
he can get real Ford parts at a lot less then the dealer can.
Also you still get the Ford warranty with the part.
They have fast shipping and nice people.

EDIT : I don't know why that came out so fuzzy. If you can't read
it let me know and when I am home I'll post a better copy.

On the Bold. Pin 7 is suppose to be always hot, with the key on. It usually is used to power, accessory lights in the trailer or charge the trailer battery while the key is on. It has nothing to due with the running lights unless you have a short or bad ground on the trailer.

Is the Trailer battery good? Is it grounded? Pin 7 Could be back feeding to the running lights, if the trailer battery is bad or missing. (been there done that)

Hey there I'm having the same issue with my truck and was wondering what ended up being wrong. Like you, don't want to change out the central junction fuse box to find out that's not the problem. Thanks for any info!

Test for the trailer feedback is simply to unplug and test seven pin on truck to see if any pin is hot with key off and trailer unplugged.

If it is only with key on, but lights switched off on truck, pull the fuse for the charge line. If the lights then go out, check behind seven pin on truck as that is the weak spot for connections and charge line to pins could be feeding marker light pin.

It seems to me pulling the fuse in the truck for the parking lights should kill power to the relay, which would tell you whether the relay is welded closed or whether the lead to the parking lights are picking up power from a feedback loop at another source. If the lights were still on or the pin was hot with the fuse out, power has to be coming from some place other than the relay as the relay should not have power to it.

To know whether the feedback was coming from within the cfb or a source outside the cfb, you would have to isolate the lead feeding the parking lights from the cfb.

If the only consequence of the failed relay or feedback is the parking lights on the trailer are always on, unplug the trailer when parked for long periods of time.

I'm just trying to think this through on the fly, so see if it makes sense.

Good luck,

Steve
