I am hoping maybe someone on here can help clarify something for me. I just rebuilt a 300 and swapped out the worn 300.
I am using the distributor and points from the removed engine. It runs fine but I wanted to upgrade to the pertronix ignitor and eliminate the points. I hear marvelous things about the simple swap.
Here comes the rub. I purchased the ignitor 1264 since that is what the catalog on pertronix web site said my distributor took. It was wrong.
I was able to return it and I was in contact with support at pertronix over email. I sent them pics they requests that I will include here. They are telling me that I need the ignitor 1261.
Funny part is this, I have a local sped shop telling me that the 1261 is for the autolite distributor and I have a Motorcraft. They say the one for motorcraft is the 1266.
I don't want to order the wrong one again. does anyone have experience with this paticular distributor and the Pertronix Ignitor 1?
I have the 1261 in my 69 F100 with 240 CID. But can't recall my details on the distributor. Believe I used the same model in my 71 with 240. Not that this post was of any use since I don't know which distributor I have (:
Do you know if your distributors are autolite or motorcraft?
My research shows the 1266 that the speed shop is recommending as pre 65.
I am fairly certain that I need the 1261, but have seen multiple places saying the 1266.
I will see what I can find out this evening. By the way I used the pertronix relay kit on my 69 to supposedly get a full 12v to the system. Pretty easy install. Never like sticking another piece of stuff under the hood, but this was not too bad.
I am not overly opposed to adding something like a relay. I still have to do the headlight relays. It has just been one thing after another lately, so I find it best to do one repair/upgrade at a time.
Wiring up the new cluster now to install tonight or tomorrow. Then it will be time to make a decision on the pertronix. The truck is my daily driver and I have no other vehicle if it is down.
I have been cleaning up my f600 cluster. Was planning to use it in the 71, but may use it in the 69 since it would be plug and play. May test it over the weekend. Just wish I could find a tach or something similar for the vacuum gauge hole.
But I will check the sides of my distributor to see what make.
Just an update, I ordered the 1261. Most everything I have found points to that one. Should be here in a few days. Will update once install works/fails
