Hello all! I have a 70 f100 with a 302 in front of a 3.03 column shift transmission. Everything seems to be smooth, but when I'm in 2nd and not keeping pressure on the drive train, it slips out of gear. It doesn't fall all the way out, just enough as to not mesh. If I try and shift it back without pulling it back down in neutral, it rakes badly. Any ideas?
The body mounts are solid with no rust at all. The only rust is the right hand floor pan, and under the battery box. Could the linkage need some tweaking? If so, how would I go about it?
Are the shift levers on the base of the steering column tight or sloppy, also what shape are the grommets at the transmission levers. Did this just start, or has it started gradually. Are the motor mounts still in good condition. You may have a worn out shift tube. If you look close at the base of the column there is a place to insert a pin that alines the levers in the neutral position to center them . Make sure the levers are tight on their shafts on the transmission. If all of this checks out then you may have some internal transmission problems.
