I traded my 87 f350 4x4 dually yesterday for a super clean little 78 f100 2wd longbed with a 300 6cyl and a 3 spd manual that was originally on the column but the PO for some odd reason put it on the floor (I hate when people do stuff like that) so my question is..what can I do to put it back on the column like it originally was? I'm missing the gear shift on the column and the 2 shift rods that go to the transmission..my goal for this little truck is to put it back to 100% original and it's not far from there now with the exception of the floor shifter. Any light you guys could shine on this for me would be greatly appreciated!
Is there not anyone that can tell me a little bit about where I can get parts etc.?
The best bet is a wrecking yard for the linkage parts. Most of the time people put a floor shift in a vehicle that had a 3 on the tree is because the shift linkage gets worn inside the steering column, the shift linkage often gets locked between 1st and reverse, and they do not know how to rebuild\repair the shift linkage in the steering column.
I'd get the shift linkage rods connecting from the steering column to the transmission from the junkyard and purchase "NEW" the wear items utilized inside the steering column from someone like Jeffs Bronko graveyard and rebuild it myself. I cant remember if there is a "kit" for the wear items or not. It has been several years since I have rebuilt one. It is not that hard to do. It will shift like a new one when you are done. There was something about the spring in the column though..I just dont remember what....

Thankyou Riderman I appreciate your input..I never thought about Jeffs bronco graveyard but I'll sure check that out..another option I've considered if I couldn't get the parts I needed to fix the column I'd to change the column and make it an automatic and just build a nice little c4 and be done with it....what do you think?
The 2 usual reasons why people install floor shifters w/3 speed manuals.
1) Pot metal shift collar has an internal 'bridge' that connects it to the shift tube. Over time the bridge begins to crack, eventually snaps off. 1961/77 collar is the same, 1978/79 is different.
2) Bottom of the steering column under the hood is where the two manual control selector levers are located that the shift rods from the trans attach to.
These levers have bushings, which crack apart, causing the shift lever to bind up between 1st & 2nd. 1961/72's use rubber bushings, 1973/79's use nylon bushings that are available from Ford.
People cannot find the parts at local autoparts stores, so they install floor shifters.
FYI ~ 3 M/T Shift Rods: D3TZ-7326-C .. 2/3 & D5TZ-7328-A .. 1st/Reverse: 1973/76 F100/250 // D7TZ-7326-A .. 2/3 & D7TZ-7328-A .. 1st/Reverse: 1977/79 F100/250.

And btw: You're in the same boat with an A/T because the same thing occurs with its shift collar (1965/77 same, 1978/79 different). The single selector lever bushing cracks apart: Gee whiz, what gear am I in?
Then there's this: A/T has a half moon shaped shift gate bolted to the bottom of the upper flange. Tab on end of shift lever fits in between individual gates.
People put the shift lever into Park before setting the hand brake, causing the truck to roll...just enough...that the parking pawl inside the trans locks up.
Now the lever has to be YANKED out of Park and sooner or later, the gate between Park & Reverse snaps off. Now when the lever is placed into Park, it slips out into Reverse. Not pleasant!
Welcome to the wonderful world (not!) of Ford 3 M/T & A/T shift lever parts.
Here is the illustration of your column from the Ford parts catalog. Note, there is a difference in some of the parts between power and non-power steering.
Some of the shifter parts are still available new, some are available aftermarket and some you'll probably need to find in the salvage yards.
Once you know what you'll need, post the basic part numbers (the numbers on the illustration) and I'll see if I can locate any new parts that are still available.
Geesh, we all have our skills. Those who look up the parts and those who know how to install them...correctly... Sorry, a ole joke from a ole factory mechanic..lol. REAL mechanics usually didnt give each other a reach around though for doing their job. Well, at least. I never needed stroked...

Parts catalog pics may not show complete standard (hardware) parts suffixes. Cannot find standard parts when the part number is incomplete.
I have a Standard Parts Catalog, easier to look number up in it, than troll thru the truck parts catalog's text section looking for the little charmer...that may not be listed.
Obsolete, but...how many would'ja like? Found 220 of the little charmers.
