Is this a 3 spd on the column? Often times when the column shifting changes, it's because the front cab mounts are rusted and weak, causing the front of the cab to settle. This changes the distance from the column to trans, so the linkage is out of adjustment. You could try to adjust the linkage to get buy. But inspect the front cab mounts for signs of rust and buckling.
I had a column shift problem with a 79 F100 about five years ago, I could hardly get the thing into first gear, something in the column shift was worn out, cant remember what it was. I took it to a transmission place and they fixed it with new parts but it cost a few hundred dollars, later I found out that you can get floor shift kits for less than a hundred bucks. If I had known that then I would have taken that route. Don't know if that helps but it is something to think about.
