looking at buying a very original 1966 f100 2wd. The truck is in great shape and the 352 engine has never been apart and still runs well. The only problem is that it pops outta gear in park and reverse, but stays in drive just fine. I need to know what it will take to fix this problem and how hard it is to do. I thought about just replcing the whole column with another, but like I said the truck is all original and I kind of want to keep it that way. Any help with this today would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I don't think this has anything to do with the column since mine is similiar when in Park and I try to start it. Turns out it isn't 100% in place so doesn't start unless I held it. This required adjustment of the linkage connecting the shift lever to the transmission reached through the engine compartment. Mine had enough slop to create a little problem. Maybe yours has even more slop.
It is most likely caused by the cab mounts letting the cab settle down, usually from rusting out.
Check them out to see if the cab has settled.
It may also be caused by a worn selector detent underneath the collar, above the shift lever. This detent is a flat metal piece, punched out for each of the pocations for the gears. It often wears down in the Park-Reverse section because the shift lever traverses across it each time.
My money is on settled cab mounts, aggravated by a worn detent selector.
Thanks guys for the quick responses. I will check out those areas that you indicated. Any other suggestions on this truck would appreciated. I'm not a Ford person, so my knowledge on this truck is limited. Thanks
Where are my manors! Welcome to the one place on the internet you'll find good info. Some of the most helpful people you will meet. I just noticed this is your 2nd post.

C5TZ-7A216-A Transmission Control Detent
C5TZ-7343-A Bushing Kit A/T Selector Lever (bottom of steering column under hood)
C0DZ-7228-A Transmission Shift Collar (socket..where the shift lever fits to on steering column)
The collar and bushing kit are still available, the detent prolly isn't.
Try Green Sales in Ohio for the detent (800-543-4959)
