I can only hear my glow plug relay when the hood is raised, standing by the truck.
Also you just about have to be an acrobat to ohm out glow plugs through the uvch. its much easier through the 40 pin.
Not for sure on this, but wouldn't it seem that the WTS light stays on for 7 - 12 secs. so the glow plugs have a chance to get hot before cranking begins? Curious to know how to tell if one or all of the plugs should be replaced?

The WTS light doesn't have any bearing at all on glow plug operation, more so to remind the operator that they are in a diesel and they need to wait, on these trucks at least. The glow plugs can remain on for up to two minutes once the key is turned, depending on the temperatures involved at the time.
The only way to really check your glow plugs is to ohm them out, as mentioned above. If you do have to replace any, use only Motorcraft replacements, the aftermarket ones have been known to swell at the tip making it impossible to remove without pulling the head.
Many thanks for the info. I'll try the ohm testing. Also, truck just started flashing the overdrive off light, and the auto parts guy could not get a code?! Any thoughts on this one would be appreciated too.
The OD off light flashing means there are transmission codes being stored. As far as the parts store being able to read them, it is going to be highly unlikely, these trucks are not truly OBD II compliant and as such those readers rarely work. If I were you I would search for a member called Tugly he has an excellent link in his signature block for reader options, this will pay dividends over time....
