When it is cold out side like 20 degrees I'm having problems starting my 2000 7.3 I'm cycling it about 5 times and misses smokes white for a bit then stays running I was thinking of changing out the fuel filter.
Anyone have idea what it could be?
You need to verify if your glow plug system is operating correctly. Could be something as simple as a glow plug relay.
Do a search for testing glow plug system. If you look at the sticky at the top of this forum you will find a link to winter hard starting.
plug it in for at least 3 hours and see if it starts up. if it does it is glow plug problem.
next using a test light probe the large terminals of the glow plug relay after someone turns the key on. one should be hot all the time, the other should be hot for up to two minutes after key on.
if they are not both hot when the key is turned on, the glow plug relay is bad. if they are both hot, then it is either bad glow plugs, or bad connections in the under valve cover harness.
i use a 12 volt led connected to the glow plug side of the relay and mounted inside the cab to tell me for sure when power is going to the glow plugs, because the light in the dash will come on for around 25 seconds whether the plugs are getting power or not.

Or worn poppet valves on injectors. Truck will exhibit the exact same symptoms as bad glow plugs or relay on cold start. Much more expensive to fix though.
Great advice so far from all. What weight oil are you running. If you aren't using 5w40 full synthetic, changing to one will very likely be a huge help until you can find the problem.
Rotella T6, Mobile 1 Turbo Diesel, Valvoline Premium Blue, all come in 5w40.
Yesterday it was 28 degrees and after several attempts I finally got the truck started. I made it to my appointment and went by and picked up a Borg Warner GPR.
This morning I went out and using a volt meter found I was losing 1.25 volts through the existing GPR.
I got on the forum and found 1 volt drop will cause a hard start.
I put on the new GPR, checked the oil level on the HPOP, which was fine. I hit the key and BAMM the truck fired right off.
I want to say thanks to everyone who takes the time to contribute to this site. You all save me so much money.
