XLT vs Low budget model long term reliabilty ?

For a long term keeper how much less of a headache is a more basic model as far as keeping up all the electrics and so forth compared to a XLT.

Thanks for any info.

With a truck of this vintage there is no more electronics in a higher trim level than a lower trim level, options that made up the higher trim levels were things like bucket seats or captains chairs, electrical conveniences like powered window and locks, and things like chrome bumpers and body trim. So to answer the question you may see problems with electric window motors after many years of use but the chrome bumpers often outlast these trucks by a factor of 2(I see tons in the scrapyard that look perfect) while the painted bumpers are rusted at 5 years of age.

No. I finally sold my 25yr old truck because of rust issues(floor and cab mounts gone) that had also begun to affect the electrical system but I also live in the rust belt. I can't remember ever seeing one of these trucks burnt from an electrical fire, I'm sure it has happened but it's not at all common. The most common electronic issue with these trucks is dried up capacitors in the PCM but that is common to all models.

I hate to hear that, Chief. Any plans to get another 1987 - 1996 truck? If so, what would be your plans for the new one?

Thank you sir for your help, reliability wise what do you think I should look for in a medium duty work truck old school , light hauling. The old stuff with a distributor was easier to work on ?

I want to hunt down a good old truck, my F 350 7.3 is ? able as to weather I want to throw money at it.

Again thanks. Some of the Chevys were real simple but not as well made as a Ford ?

There is a recall for the brake pressure switch for cruise catching on fire.

I had that on my 1995 Bronco and guess what I got a great deal on it because it caught fire from that very reason but I was to lazy to fix the light damage to it and gave that one away.

I do not like to wrench like I did when I was 20 or 30..

No current plans but I would never say never.. not sure how long I can survive without a 4x4 and these old trucks are dependable and easy to work on.

One thing about FL, it is a treasure for old relics in good shape.
