Custom is usually the low end with few options where the Lariat is one of the highest trim levels. Eddie Baurer is the fanciest as far as I know but I don't know which years they were available. I have an XL and in 96 is the low end truck. The way I look at it is the less that is on the truck is the less that can go wrong. My $.02
Trim levels refere to the standard features; although, optional features can still be on the truck. I have a custom that has carpet and cloth seats, but many XL's come with vinyle seats and floors. I've seen XLT's that have every feature offered - there aren't standard equipment on the XLT but are on the Lariat. Some features are only available on the upper end of the trim line, but you can find a lot of lesser trim lines with plenty of high-end options.
Ford doesn't seem to have a lot of information on trucks past '92. If yours is newer, they may be able to help you out.
My 'Custom' originally came with vinyl bench seats, rubber floor mat, painted grey bumpers and wheels, grey grille and headlight trim, no A/C or power windows or door locks, no cruise or tilt wheel, no sliding rear window, no tach, no fog lights, no towing package, no map lights, basically it came with no options whatsoever except for the C6 automatic transmission and swing out truck mirrors. I've since added alot of 'amenities' to the truck. Still have a few more to go. This was originally a gov't truck and apparently Uncle Sam doesn't waste money on anything 'frivolous' when they buy a new truck.
That reminds me, my custom has chrome bumpers, tow package, a tach, sliding rear window and cruise control. My guess is that it was odered from Ford. I knew a guy that had an eddie bauer explorer with a 5 speed - I can't imagine that's too common.
I noticed the 92-96 XLT's with no sliding back window, my 94 included, it would appear the 87-91 XLT's had rear sliders, and 92-96 didn't, anyone else notice this?
You guys are confusing options with trim lines. A/C, rear step bumper, sliding rear window, power locks & mirrors are all options. They're available with every trim line.
The trim lines were Custom, XL, XLT, XLT Lariat. I'm not sure where Eddie fits in, to be honest. The XLT Lariat had the thicker visors, cloth inserts in the doors, carpet floors, fake wood trim around the radio and climate stuff, headliner, etc. Usually nicer wheels, too.
I've also seen some base model trucks without the chrome trim around the wheel wells.
YES! does that has some to do with the rear slider? andym I've seen a 94 eddie bauer, but not a 94 lariat, mine is a straight XLT, alittle off topic I noticed my steering wheel has initals in the bottom left of the wheel SRS does anyone know what that stands for?
while on the topic of trim.....mine is a custom 92 302 4x4, with cloth seats, a/c, cruise rear slider, and quad shocks on the front........reg cab....long box dual tanks no power windows or locks etc. and a 5 speed........
on the chrome trim on the wheel wells, are there 2 different sizes of it?....ive seen it just be like a bead of chrome edging, but mine has more of the "eyebrow" effect....only reason i ask is cos im missing the left rear piece.....and im wondering if it was a stock item.....so a junkyard possibility.....anyone know?

it sounds like your trim peice on the fender wells is aftermarket, if its the thick one, the stock one is around 5/8" wide and the after market is considerably bigger like atleast 1 " wide, shaunr thanks for the srs tip always wondered what the #ell that meant, no lariat in a reg cab eh, my 91 was a XLTlariat reg cab, so they discontinued the lariat in the reg cab after 91-interesting! I wonder why
In the late 80's - early 90's, it was custom, xl, xlt, xlt lariat. The custom was just that, you could actually pick and choose from every single option available, except for a very few options that just came with each trim line. For example, you could not order the leather wrapped steering wheel that came with the Lariat on a Custom. You couldn't get the stainless tailgate cover on the Custom either. You could pick and choose options for an XL or XLT also, as long as they weren't the few available only with a higher (or lower) trim line. Most of the time the customs came as strippers though because it was cheaper to order the options as packages that came with the higher trim lines.
I remember my dad ordering an '88, 8' box, regular cab XLT Lariat, so at least then, the Lariat was something you could get in a regular cab. That was a great truck. He got a '93 XLT also, but I think by that point they had dropped or limited the Lariat thing and somewhere along the line they dropped the custom that had been around forever. They came back with the Lariat name later in the '90's, I think, after '96.
There was a huge list of options, there had to be over 30. I still have my dad's '88 brocure, I should scan the options page.
Another thing I think is interesting is that the late 70's trucks were custom, ranger, explorer and maybe lariat instead of XL, XLT, etc. They dropped the names to use them on the ranger and explorer, obviously...
BTW, to be 100% correct, SRS = supplementary restraint system. It supplements seat belts.
