Help With Fuel Filter Change

So my drain valve does not work....I only get a few drips. Is the valve itself the common culprit or the stainless line getting clogged?

Can the filter lid be removed...is the bowl under pressure? I'd like to get the bowl emptied so I can replace the drain valve as well as install my gauge sending unit. I don't have any leaks so wasn't thinking of doing a complete R&R.

If it drains a little that should be enuf to let the pressure off- Let it drain a little while then open the lid slowly ( just crack it open ) wear safety goggles & have some rags ready- Once it is open you can suck out the remaining fuel with an old turkey baster or some old rags to soak it up & do your necessary repairs. Make sure not to leave the key on to run stereo or the like while doing this so you don't power the fuel pump. Edit - I would get a rebuild kit for the drain valve- When you take the line off you can check & make sure its open - Blow it out with air pressure. Might try that b4 u go too far with the valve replace/repair but I suspect it would be the valve itself may be broken & not turning internally. Good Luck

The pressure may have already drained off to somewhere else.

Somebody please correct me if my memory sucks, but the valve should drain the whole bowl. Either your valve is not working, or your bowl is draining to someplace you don't want it to.

My info needs to be verified - I might be thinking of when I had the cap off.

My valve is not working correctly, and it leaks in the valley some when opened. My bowl does NOT drain....that is the root of my problem. I was just curious if the lid could be removed without draining, and I learned that it can.

I was able to get the filter changed, but left the sending unit install for another time. Now I'm battling a damn gasket that doesn't seem to want to seal as I'm getting a minute amount of seepage around the lid....and she is on there tight! I'm hoping it will seal up after some mileage? Otherwise I'll need to pop the lid and try another seal.

It is a Ford filter and lid FYI from Riff Raff.

Perhaps the O-Ring is inverted? There are two which need to be installed. One on the Filter, the other on the housing.

** You shouldn't have to tighten it "too tight", maybe 20 Ft.Lb. as the O-Ring compresses to make the seal. You could also have some trash / corrosion where the O-Ring meets the housing. Maybe a good time to pull it and reseal it....

The drain valve passageway is probably clogged with trash.

Kinda think of it as taking a squirt in the woods.

I drain and clear KOEO. It has enough pressure to splirt out a stone, but not enough to hit the neighbors house.

Just get a friend to turn the key on for 20 seconds. (My wife jokers).

I find it makes getting the debris out of the bottom of the bowl easier before a filter swap and it self lubes the orings your going to replace for lack of use.

Lack of use...lol.

My drain never worked either. Never found out why either. Never tried it with the key on, if it's blocked that should do it.

The seal was put on correctly and I made sure the housing flange was clean. However I put the seal on dry, did not coat with diesel....could that cause the seepage I am seeing?

That could well be the reason as the gasket can drag and be thicker in one area than another.
