help please

I have a quick question for you I have an '81 bronco 351w edelbrock intake and edelbrock carb. I am having the worse troubles trying to get it to idle right. I have to have the idle mixture screws out about 5 turns before it idle descent. and at that point it is at 1500rpms. I have the pcv and the carbon canister t'ed together and plug into the front of the carb then I have the brake booster plugged into the back into the intake. I sprayed some starting fluid around the carb and in the back of the carb when I spray it it revs up I jsut bought the edelbrock egr kits and have new gaskets for the carb. I called edelbrock and they said the heat riser that goes between the egr plate and the carb might be bad.. what are your thoughts?
Is it a dumb idea to use gasket sealer in a situation like this?

I don't think the carbon canister should recieve full manifold vacuum constantly. According to the manual, the purge is controlled by ported vacuum, and is drawn into manifold vacuum. Try disconnecting and plugging the purge line near the manifold, and see if that helps.
