People that install Crown Vic/Grand Marquis front ends should be aware that only the late models (2003/2011) have rack & pinion steering.
1979/2002's have Ford/Saginaw worm and roller P/S gearboxes that were introduced in misc 1965 cars and 1969 F100/250 2WD's and F350's.
While this may not be informative to you, it will be informative to others, regardless of what some naysayer claimed.
Every automakers cars and light trucks sold in the US today have rack & pinion steering, because it's far more precise than the old worm and roller steering.
Ok still irrelevant to what this thread is about. It's a build thread. I know what I have and just asked about the steering setup on what other people have done. Thanks though.
*Update*
my buddy got the crown vic clip put in and has to get some more metal to fab the A arm brackets, box the frame in, and button it all up. I ordered the parts for the steering to get it connected to the crown vic rack and pinion. I got two 3/4" steering joints on Amazon to fit the steering shaft on both ends. Heres a link to them:
I also ordered from speedway motors the 3/4" steering shaft and a heim joint to stabilize the steering shaft like MCD46 did with a bracket and pipe in his previous picture of his setup.
I am going to check the truck out on Tuesday afternoon so hopefully i can get some more pictures of the progress of the truck.
Went and checked the truck out yesterday. Everything is looking great. He has got the drivers side welded up and was going to be working on the truck for the rest of the night. The stearing joints and shaft I got were perfect.
This is the drivers side that's been welded.
He stil had to do this one.
Thanks! ^^ since my buddy has a bunch of other projects to get going he is going to get just the front finished up and get it driveable and I'm going to save up and just bag the truck all the way around. That's more of what I am wanting amyway instead of just the axle flip in the rear so I think that's what I'm going to do.
Yea he does a good job. Does anyone have any pictures of a cv swapped truck and an axle flip in the rear? I'm on the fence between just bagging the truck and flipping it.
That's why a buddy is doing mine. Lol I think your truck MCD46 looks great. If it is lower in the back you can't tell at all. Thanks for all your help.
Ordered me a Eastwood 135 mig welder Monday so when I get the truck back I've got a few things in mind that I need to do with it. I bought a fuel cell to put in the bed of the truck so I'm going to remove the one behind the seat and take out the filler neck and cap and patch that, have a gaping hole in the dash where an aftermarket radio used to be so I'm going to patch that up and put the radio in the glove box, and thinking about shaving the door handles so they will need patched up too.
