Re-Key Ignition Lock?

The 64s ignition lock innards are getting pretty loose where it doesn't want to unlock. Don't want to mess with the door locks, a replacement ignition lock can easily be keyed to the existing set right? Would just need the ignition lock itself.

Any good locksmith will have no trouble matching the new cylinder to your existing keys.

Suggest contact couple local locksmiths and inquire and compare the cost of having a set made to that of purchasing the entire ign. and door lock set. Just as an examples; Obsolete Ford parts offer a set for $25, Mac's has them in their cat. at $20??

As a refresher in removing the ignition key assembly: insert ignition key and turn counter clock-wise to the 'ACC' position, then lightly insert a paperclip, or something similar, in the small opening on the face of the key assembly then continue to rotate key in the counter clockwise direction. Make sure to place the key assembly in same position when installing. Once remove check out the inside of the ignition switch and the cam on the end of the key assembly, notice it can only be installed 1 way. PO had installed the assembly incorrectly on my 65 and there were occasions when I would turn the key off and engine would continue to run, or be driving to find key and lock assembly rolling around on the floor.

Thanks ND. You guys are right having a cylinder rekeyed may cost more than a whole set. Either method is kind of a hassle. Maybe the existing cylinder, I can remove it and see if something can be crimped or something. It may be just worn out though.

Probly should remove to determine if the problem is with the key assembly, ignition switch, or both. May plan on truck being out of commission for what ever time it may take to receive the replacement parts. I have learned to contact part supplier to make sure parts are in stock.

Switch itself was replaced some time ago. Can't remember why exactly. Musta been bad though. No, this is a problem with the lock cylinder. It sometimes needed a little finessing to get it to work but it's a full time pita now.

The cylinder does not come with the switch, both were only available individually, but...

The ignition switch bezel has to be removed first before the cylinder can be removed.

Between the switch and the backside of the dash is a spacer that will probably fall off once the switch is removed from the dash.

Re-Key Ignition Lock?

Tedster9.......from ND's comments, it looks like the '66 is the same? if so, I know I have an ignition cylinder that is new, I will send it to you at no charge if you would like it......it will have a key, so if you want to suffer through two keys you wouldn't have to pay a locksmith to re-key......pm me with your address if you want this, m.

Thank you for the kind offer. I have one on order already, however. I went out and looked at it earlier today, and it worked fine, go figure. It's just worn out is all, two keys isn't the end of the world and rarely lock the doors.
